New concept (?) in rest areas?

My wife and I stayed over at a rest area this past week here in Texas. Now they have what they call "Safety Rest Areas." We rolled in around midnight, Thanksgiving Eve, just east of Pecos. I went inside and there was a police officer on duty. Just thought I'd share for those who want a safe (and free) place to overnight in Texas. Info and map in links below.

That's a great idea. I wish more states would do it, and will keep it in mind if/when I head across TX.

Texas has built a lot of really nice rest areas complete with clean inside restrooms heated and cooled, playgrounds, mini museums of local interest, wifi, snacks/drinks, and large parking areas. Have not seen one with an officer on duty, but have not been in one late at night.
