We are freshly hatched newbie snowbirds enroute from Saskatchewan to Apache Junction Arizona departing 3rd week in December. Travelling US87 to Great Falls MT for the night then stop 2nd night in/around Salt Lake City UT then next Las Vegas and arriving on the 4th day in Apache Junction. Plan on staying in our class C . Any suggestions as to safe/secure points to throw down the anchor each night ? Walmart , flying J etc. RV parks probably all closed for winter I'm thinking . Thanks for all responses !!

Suggest you plan your trip so that you pass through the Salt Lake City area on a Sunday. Unless you really like heavy traffic, Sunday is the best day to drive through our area. I also snowbird and even though I know where I'm going I always leave and return on Sunday.

I have an app for my smart phone, Allstays Camp and RV. There is a one time charge for it but it is not much. It shows cg,sp, Wal-Mart's and service centers.

As a side note my wife and I are also going to Apache Junction. We will be at Superstition Sunrise, arriving around 1 Dec.

We have done the trip down I15 several times. We have never stayed in Great Falls but others have provided that info. You will be travelling through high country until you get to St. George, UT, so it is cold at night and really nice to have electric plug in.
At Boulder, MT there is the RC rv park, right next to the service station as you exit the interstate. We use hwy 69 & 41 from Boulder to Dillon rather than the interstate as this route allows you to avoid 2 passes in I15. It is a good 2 lane road & lots of semis use it.
At Dillon, MT you can stay in the parking lot of the Comfort Inn with electric plugin for $10.
The 7 Flags truck stop at Downie, ID (exit 31) will let you stay in their campground (electric only) if you buy $10 worth of fuel.
We have never stayed in Salt Lake City. We have stayed at High Country rv park at Nephi, UT. Take the exit to the Flying J and it is about 1/2 mile north.
At Mesquite, NV you can stay at the rv park at the Oasis Casino or they have a dry camping area, if you have water. The Flying J at Nephi or the Love's truck stop near Beaver are good places to fill your water tank.
Watch the weather closely and try to have a window of 4 days with no snow. Travel safe.

there's a flying j at McCammon ID, exit 47, big enough to hold you.
there's a flying j at Scipio, UT, exit 188 on I 15

I've used Lakeside RV in Provo for our overnight stop several times -- if you run the gauntlet of SLC at the end of your day. At the north side, there is a KOA at Brigham City, which is OK but not great.

When you get setup in Apache Junction area be sure to make the Apache Trail run in your car. This is a winding mtn narrow road feeding all of the reservoirs that feeds the Valley water. We usually take the winding Apache trial up to the end at Roosevelt Lake and come back the same way but you can switch over to the big road on the way back and end up in Scottsdale - short run back to Apache Junction.

Its been awhile for us in that area and always have great memories being there...

A trip over to Sedona AZ is another must see place with its RED ROCKS and great shopping places...

2 RV parks in Great Falls open all year. Dick's RV Park and the KOA ($$$) or
There is a Town Pump truck stop off I-15 exit 277.
In Salt Lake City there is a KOA that is open all year. There is a Flying J truck stop at I-215 exit 27.
Las Vegas - Pilot Travel Center, I-15 exit 48. If you don't want to say in Las Vegas, Canyon Trail RV Park in Boulder City is more reasonable. There are also campgrounds on Lake Mead with and without hookups.

We have stayed at Walmart parking lots with no problems, but not in big cities. We usually stop in the smaller towns and it's usually peaceful and quiet as those stores tend not to be open 24 hrs.
