Overnight along I-39 Illinois

We will be traveling south on I-39 to I-80 E. We are looking for an easy overnight stop, hookups not really necessary, between Rockford and Chicago area. I noticed on the map there is a rest area on I-39 near Rt. 30. Would this be a safe place to overnight - we have never stayed at a rest area overnight. Not really interested in paying $35 and up for a c.g.

Any suggestions ? ? ?

If you are traveling east on rt 80 past the rt 39 junction, there is a Love's truck stop on the Utica exit. Across the road is a campground, hickory hollow, if you want to pay.

Thank you for the overnight suggestions. I will check them out, particularly the S.P.
We always use our own bathroom facilities and our only slide is small, so most spots work for us. We have never been in this area before so the help was appreciated.

Rock Cut is nice, with some sites pretty private. Electric hookups only; showerhouse available. I've also seen the sites at that Shell station mentioned - much different atmosphere but would do for overnight. Not sure about how much room there would be for slideouts though.

You might want to try Rock Cut State Park near Rockton.

$25 per night with 30 Amp electric.

1. Exit from I-39 at IL-173 West.

2. Go West for about 1/2 mile and turn left into the park.

3. Follow signs to the campground.

Staying overnight in Rest Areas in Illinois is illegal & last I knew the State Police would make you move. We were on I-39 from US24 up to Wisconsin last Monday. But we stayed at the Flying J at mm1. That is way north of where you get off at 80. We had planned to stay at a Walmart but pushed on. So sorry I can't help.

We did not have much choice as we blew the tranny. The people at the chev dealer were very good to deal with also.

Haven't stayed there but have driven by; looks like it'd be okay for an overnighter. Otherwise, there are several campgrounds near the I-80 corridor in the Starved Rock region.
