Possible base camp in Maine

DW suggested to post this topic. We are looking for a base camp in Maine during May. 35 foot Motorhome. Base camp focus point to take day trips to explore Maine. Any recommendations you may share will be really appreciated.

When we went to Maine the 2nd time, we stayed in Old Orchard Beach at Ne're Family Campground, which was right in town. We could walk downtown without taking the truck. The lobster pound was right across the street. Downtown was 3 blocks away. It was basic with a small pool, wifi, bath house with showers, electric, water and sewer. No other amenities, but about half the price of the other "resorts".

We checked out the southern section (Portland, Freeport, OOB) for 5 days, and then we headed on up to Bar Harbor and checked out Acadia NP and surrounding area for another 5 days. We stayed at Narrows 2.

We stayed at Black Brook Cove CG last year, right on the lake and there is some exploring in Rangeley and the Museum close by. The rates were very reasonable.

No.

Walmarts are for spending the night or resting for 8-10 hours, not for real "camping", putting out your grill, etc.

It's Acadia NP. Probably just fat fingers on your part but much easier to find when spelled correctly! We like Poland Springs Campground. It's about 35 miles outside Portland. Very laid back, nicely wooded, a bit rustic. There are many choices for Acadia but our favorite is the Bar Harbor KOA Oceanside. Pricey for sure, but fantastic sunsets, lobster bakes, pancake breakfasts, and a very clean campground. Sites are a bit tight but well worth it.

I highly recommend Sandy Shores RV Resort It's not listed in any camping directories. 75 privately owned sights in Warren Maine (near Rockland). Nice big sights and friendly people.........Bruce

Used to live in MA. Vacationed in Maine often. Previous posters are right it is a very big state. The issues is most tings are along a vary long coast. You may want to seriously consider staying at two or more places along it's length. Like maybe around Portland and then in northern portion.

We like Shorehills Campground in Boothbay for this. From Shorehills we can go to Kittery to Acadia on day trips without a problem. However, if you want to go beyond Acadia, or think you want to spend more of you time above Acadia, I would not recommend.

x3 on the Pumpkin Patch. Great location for day trips to Acadia, Moosehead and Baxter SP.

We have stayed at the Freeport KOA (actually in Durham) and the Freeport Village Campground...both are centrally located in south. You probably need to make a decision soon (like last week!) because our experience is that Maine campgrounds fill up early in the season. Another note, the weather for early may in the Freeport area is looking pretty "wet" right now.

Stayed at Pumpkin Patch, Hermon, Maine. Right outside Bangor. Great home base for day tripping.

I agree more info would be helpful. Mountains? Lakes? Coast?
