Rockport attraction oyster fleet

The oyster fleet is currently in full force working out of the Rockport/Fulton Texas harbor. At 400-430 in the afternoon 30 plus boats will arrive loaded with oysters, swing them off the boats to pallets and on to trucks. Quite a frentic activity for a normally quite spot.

Actually they die immediately when you cut both sides of the muscle attaching it to the shell. If you put the oyster near your ear quickly you can hear them croak. Its not loud, may be hard to hear in a noisy bar or restaurant, but you ought to try.

Yes they are indeed alive. You would not want to eat one that is dead and rotten.

Here's a question for all of you oyster shucker's: are the oysters live when you eat them raw?

Went out with a group for some fresh on the half shell and was asked that exact question by one of the people that never ate one? I assume not, but I really didn't know :h never thought about it.
Thereโ€™s no fool, like an old fool.

LynnandCarol,

Cannot eat them raw. How do you grill them? Hope to be visiting Rockport.

Yes! It is something. And if you drop by the seafood store and pick some up, they are right tasty! We eat them raw, on the grill, baked. MMMmmmmmm
