We are planning on visiting friends in the Portland area and are having a difficult time locating campgrounds that are open in April.
Any suggestions?

The traditional opening date in this area is usually May 15th give or take a day or two. The only ones I know of that open at the end of April is one in Brewster on the Cape and Wild Duck (adults only) in Scarborough ME which is near Portland ME. Both open ,I believe, the last weekend in April. There could be others but these are the only ones I know of.

KOA's are some of the earliest CG's to open, take a look at their web site. The earliest I saw in a quick look in the area was 1 May in Saco/Old Orchard.

I've looked for off season CG's in the Northeast before, the few that are open are mostly for snowmobilers. Usually in out of the way places on major snowmobile routes.

Same for upstate NY, VT, and NH, if the OP is looking for a stop on the way. Memorial Day weekend is the usual opening timeframe. A few might be open a week or so earlier to work out the kinks.

We just had another storm this week.....There's still three feet of snow on the ground. Doubt it will be all gone by April, and if so, it will be muddy.

You could check thru allstays.com. Their filter will allow you to ask for campgrounds that are open year round.

Colonial mast is less then an hrs away. It's on a snow mobile trail and has heated pool and fireplace in a great room to relax in after a long ride. Could be pricey to just park at for a night but a nice place to stay.
