Silver Strand State Beach Coronado (San Diego)

We were going to San Diego for a week to visit relatives and friends and decided to take the Class C. This required at least one night at Silver Strand State Beach as it is hard to get closer to the Pacific than here. It is one of those good news/bad news scenarios:

It is expensive, a front row, as in right on the beach ran $71 for one night. Now keep in mind this CG has one and only one thing going for it (but it is very big thing), called the Pacific Ocean. :B You are literally right on the sand about 40 yards from the surf which is VERY nice. It does have a single lane dump station and flush toilets but you are right on Highway 75 (aka The Silver Strand), and the surf has to compete with the road noise.

If you choose a site in the second or third row back from the beach you are just that much closer to the highway and it gets a lot of traffic. Sites in the back row are no more than 20 yards from the pavement. :S

I have read several negative reviews on the net about the hosts and am happy to report we found them to be false or at least dated. The hosts were very nice, in fact this was just about the friendliest CG we have ever visited. It is what it is.... that being an asphalt parking lot where you will be very close to your neighbors but the views are hard to beat (but that damn sand does get in everywhere, no way around it). :E

As you can see from the pics the spaces/slots are tight but each comes with 30 amps and water. If you want a fire bring your own device or scramble for one of the half a dozen rings on the beach. We will be back but not real soon. Make your reservations on line early as the front row sites go quickly. Another big benefit to being here is if you want to kick it up a notch the Loews Crown Island Resort is a short walk (1/3 of a mile), away with amazing amenities.... just bring your wallet. :B

Dogs are permitted so long as they are on a 6' leash and no, they are not permitted on the beach at any time. This is not to say that more than a couple of chuckleheads were letting their dogs run on the beach. :R

Looks like they got the new power pedastals in. Before it was all dry camping, right? They closed earlier this year to redo the spaces and add those, so maybe they hiked the rates as a result. I thought it used to be around $50/night.

I suspect you are correct. :C

Yes, they lock the gates at eight, nine in the summer. Makes it easy to get rid of guests who are overstaying their welcome (just kidding). :B
