Sturgis Rally 2013

Planning on trip to Sturgis this year with MH. Have been before but not to the campgrounds, rode bikes and stayed in motel last time. Any suggestions on the best CG to stay in? We are looking at Glencoe for the full hook-ups and we don't mind the noise, any pro's, con's, better ones? All suggestions welcome.

Well, it is over with and what a show. First, the one who said the gangs don't fly their colors was very wrong, they ALL fly them and just stay away from each other during the rally. The Hells Angels were very prominent on main street in their colors along with a couple other outlaw clubs.

The trouble spot for law enforcement is The Buffalo Chip and they have a large contingent of plain clothes there 24/7. Yes, they were also here in Glencoe, but not the numbers that were at the Chip. They are looking for drugs, human trafficking and serious felony crimes, so tend to turn a blind eye to the revelry that stays inside the CG.

There are 2 very different sections here in Glencoe, the dry camping around the parade road and the RV sites. The noise and nudity were very prevalent in the dry camping areas and the RV sites were much quieter and limited nudity. The bars are everywhere and they have $1 beer for happy hour daily. The entertainment was more heavy rock and the senior rockers but was well received. Yes, there are some folks who undress when they come through the gates and don't get dressed again until they leave. The 3 miles into town can be a nightmare during some hours, but if you know the alternate routes, you can get around without spending to many hours stuck on the road....

We will be returning next year, as we had a ball and everyone we met could not have been nicer. Had a great time.

You guys are funny about the motorcycle gangs, maybe watching to much gangland on the history channel. Generally clubs like everyone else go to have fun.
I have stayed at both the chip and glencoe. Glencoe is a fairly nice campground with good concerts and quieter after midnight. The chip is loud full of fun loving individuals that may stay up to dawn on occasion. After a couple nights you get use to the noise and will sleep well. The concerts there are the absolute best in the area. I have seen folks complain about ocean lakes with the kids on the golf carts parading at night, that what the chip is except for grown folks who like to party. Pick your speed for camping and enjoy riding your bike in some terrific scenery. I love it

Had to laugh when I saw an old post telling me to calm down when I commented about how little silliness in tolerated in the area during bike week. To many folks, who only know of all the media hype, attending bike week is about as dangerous as heading into an outlaw biker clubhouse and saying, "I'm not sure what the big deal is? you look like a bunch of sissies to me?" Not much different that announcing to the neighbors that we are heading to Alaska. The next line is often, "you know that road is little more than dirt trail? Hopefully you make it".

Have a great time. Try not to laugh at all the weekend warriors dressed as pirates, and enjoy the beauty of the hills.

We have met some wonderful folks and if what we are hearing about the CG is fact, we may become regulars. The CG owners tolerates NO discord of any kind between campers and if you are observed creating a disturbance of ANY kind, you will be escorted off the property within minutes. I guess he has a large security force that is camped among all and not much escapes their eyes and ears. IMO, a good thing, when you have 35000 to 40000 people camped in one CG. Most everything else he is VERY lax about, but maintaining harmony among the campers is his big thing.

I checked out some of the pictures from the 2012 Rally. Some of the girls obviously didn't have enough money for both the trip and clothes. I may have to stop by next year just to see if the economy has improved. 🙂

We stay at big rig RV park. Bigrigrvpark.com. Very nice people full hook ups. You can also take da bus into town for drinks at night if your inclined. If you want more info feel free to pm me.

Not a problem going without a bike. In fact this year, I had injured my back in July and was pretty limited in the amount of riding I did out there. I had my pickup so we used that most of the time ... still had a good time

Allen anyone can go to Sturgis, just take money. You can stay 18 miles away at Rapid City for reasonable rates. We stayed at Hart Ranch (private park) and didn't mind the drive into Strugis at all.

We've been to Sturgis several times... first time was outside Rapid City, second at the Buffalo Chip and the last few at Glencoe. I like Glencoe for the large RV spots and the full hookups. The onsite bar has happy hour with $1 beers daily , the Full Throttle is right across the street and it's onl about 3 miles or so to Main Street
