Total vs Nominal length

Apologies if this is covered. I couldn't find it.

How tight do various types of sites get on length? I'm thinking of smallish 30 foot range rigs. I heard a rumor that some places will pull out a tape measure. Some folks have removed ladders to fit more places, etc.

Just how real are these stories?

Since I use a lot o USFS and NP campgrounds, the length can make a difference if you find a proper sized spot or not, on the automated reservation systems. Rather than leaving it to chance, I measured my trailer from rear bumper to hitch coupler. That's the figure I use, although I have a 5 ft slide out on the rear. Has never made a difference or been a problem.

Had one private park in TN measure when I could not fit into one of their sites. I was 2 inches shorter that I stated so they found me a different spot. Never had anyone measure before there was a problem.

Only campground that I ever found with a length problem measured 30' from a rock wall to the edge of the road.

I think its a rough guide. We stay at state parks a lot and in parks or sites we are familiar with I often stay on ones that are listed shorter than our 5th. The stated sizes are often way off the mark.

Just had 2 sales folks tell me to use the nominal length. On one unit that was 6 feet shorter!

Mostly unreal. And removing a ladder would leave ugly holes.
