Trip to see fall colors

My wife and I are leaving middle of September on a trip around the great lakes and down the east coast. Looking for rv parks or camping spots that you have used and liked. We will go for hikes and bike rides. We will start at Duluth, MN and end up in Washington, DC. before heading home to Missouri. The exact route is still a little up in the air. We will stay at full hookups or electric only campgrounds. We have generators but probably will not take them unless a someone convinces me it will be worth the space and trouble.
Thanks in advance for any ideas!
Bill
PS: We are in a Crossroads Cruiser 322RL Fifth Wheel. 37' give or take. I haven't posted to any site more than once or twice in my life so if I make mistakes helpful comment will be appreciated.

Thanks for all the replies. Sorry about the wrong forum. We are planning to be in the upper east coast or mountains of Main around the first of October. We will work our way south to DC over a 10 day period.

Also most of WVa is beautiful in the fall but peak will probably be a little later than New England, Upstate NY, and PA. Actually, anywhere in the Appalachian mountain chain should be beautiful in the fall. WVa had a few resort state parks and there are several state parks in the Shenandoah Valley of VA. I'd start now trying to get reservations in the East because "leaf peeping" is very popular in the Northeast and the Mid-Alantic states. Hope this helps and you get to see many beautiful sights.

Be aware that many, (or most) CG's in Vt, Nh, and Me close right around Columbus day.

Finger Lakes area of NYS is great in the fall but peak colors are around Columbus Day. Nothing in September. Adirondacks start earlier.

Any of the PA state parks in the central PA mountains are great for fall colors. Specific ones are Laurel Hill, Kooser, and Shawnee which are minutes from the PA turnpike, and may be close to your route. Further north Black Moshannon, Bald Eagle, and if you want remote as in no phone service but great scenery Worlds End and Sinnemahoning are awesome. The peak times are first week in October usually.
Too many geezers, self appointed moderators, experts, and disappearing posts for me. Enjoy. How many times can the same thing be rehashed over and over?

Mid September is too early for good to peak color in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan or Northern Wisconsin. We always go up there the first week of October and always have peak color and it is fabulous. Always stay at Tahquamenon Falls CG around the 6th to 12th of October for the last over 50 years now. Mid to 3rd week in October in the southern half of the Lower Peninsula for best color as we live in West Michigan on Lake Michigan and have for over 75 years now. All our lives is probably better said!

Lots of CG's are still open in the U P and the L P then yet thru October.

FWIW, the Tahquamenon Falls State Park CG at the lower falls is open year around and the electric is on but the water is turned off about the 12th of October or so incase of a hard freeze happening and no water lines/spigots will freeze. Lots of CG's are open all winter in Michigan and some have heated bath houses too all winter also. Platte River CG in Sleeping Bear Lakeshore National Park west of Traverse City is one that is open all year around as are the really nice tiled bath houses with private door showers. Lots of cross country skiers go there with their RVs. Kept plowed including the sites and has 30 and 50 amp on huge gorgeous campsites with paved parking area for the RV and tow vehicle and all wheels must be on the paved surface. All is surrounded by and cut out of the forest. Yup, we will be there on the way back home too as always.

Wisconsin state parks are great! If you can find any sites with hookups (usually just electric in SPs there) available along your route, you will probably find you enjoy your stay there. We haven't been to the parks that far north though so can't advise specifically.
We did stay in a few state parks in the U.P. (Michigan), though, and liked McLain SP and Indian Lake SP - we stayed at both units, and though the west unit is less well-appointed, we thought it was prettier. We liked the Eagle RIver (WI) KOA just west of the U.P., private CG in the woods with hookups.

If you will be going across the U.P. and like river traffic, you might enjoy Aune-Osborn Park in Sault Ste Marie. The CG isn't much, a flat plain with camper pads pretty close together, but it's a real kick watching lake freighters glide by RIGHT NEXT to the CG.

We loved the Lake Placid/Whiteface Mt KOA in the Adirondacks of NY. Nice & wooded, and I bet it's just gorgeous in the fall. (We were there in late summer.)

If you look at the top it will tell you what forum you posted in. This is tech support and you would probably need to post in the campgrounds forum. Hint, before posting go on right side and select the type of forum. We were all were new at one time, just takes a few post and helpful hints. Good luck and Welome!
