Tucson This Spring Where to Stay

We want to head to the Tucson area this spring for a month. Any idea when the snowbirds season ends (approximately)so that we may have a better chance of getting into a Park for a month?

Also, in the Tucson area we are looking at Desert Trails RV Park; Far Horizons Tucson Village and Justins Diamond J RV Park. Anyone have some recent experience with these Parks or any others you would recommend in the Tucson area?

In addition to doing all the good stuff in and around Tucson,i.e. Saguaro Nat. Park, Sonora Desert Museum, etc. we will be doing some mountain bike riding, hiking, geocaching, etc. so coming back to a good RV park with nice amenities is important.

Like bellybuttons, everyone has an opinion.

We live south of Tucson about 25 miles and have scoped out RV parks here over the years. We favor Rincon West and what is now a KOA and was Beaudry and LazyDays before that. Have not been to the KOA since they took over a few months ago from LazyDays.

People talk about Justin's and we have gone out there - west of town with area issues in many of our minds - and agree the sites are large but do not see where it has much to offer other than being near Saguaro West NP.

I would not recommend it to personal friends but would steer them to one of the other two.

Oh yeh ........ Voyager is a huge park and regimented to be sure. But a nice facility as well.

Now, you want to go a little south of Tucson about 40 miles? DeAnza is a REALLY nice park.

Last March we stayed at Gilbert Ray Campground in Tucson Mountain Park, 3 nights, site C27. Sites are large and all sites have 30 amp electric plus there is a water fill & dump station. I think they have a 14 day limit. Tucson Mountain Park is beautiful. It is Pima County Park and close to Old Tucson where they made a lot of the old western movies. http://webcms.pima.gov/cms/one.aspx?portalId=169&pageId=1327 and download their brochure. If we ever go there again I would try to get space C26. We enjoyed the beautiful sunrises and sunsets. We found a very good Mexican restaurant in Tucson Estates near the bank & hardware store, Los Nopales off Kinny road prior to entering Tucson Mountain Park coming from Ajo highway # 86. The reason we visited Tucson on this trip was to visit my brother & his DW. They had a park model rental at Far Horizons Tucson Village which is a great RV resort, check their website http://www.tucsonvillage.com/ it has about anything you would want in a RV resort. Last winter was cooler than normal in Tucson in fact most of AZ, but by the time we got there it was hot. Dick

The snowbird season always ends the first weekend in April. Thats when you see the first wave of people leaving. The Tucson parks wont be full. Tucson isnt a big winter destination like Phoenix-Mesa. I like Far Horizons Tucson Village. The spaces are small but its a pretty friendly park. Its also in the middle of town and your only a mile or less from shopping. Of all the parks its the most convenient to lots of shopping and restaurants. Its also close to the East Sahuaro NP and Sabino Canyon. Its also a dog friendly park. If you have dog or dogs you should really consider it,and if you like the idea of stores and convenieces nearby.

We are very partial to Justin's diamond J RV park. Very large spaces, great people and very quiet.

We have stayed a couple times at Cactus Country RV park in Vail and find it clean, well run and close enough to everything. They do a brisk business, so I would make reservations.

Justins Diamond J RV Park would be a good choice. Many snowbirds are on the move by mid March so you should not have any problem finding a spot for a month. We stay at Cactus Country RV Park near Vail, AZ and I am sure you could find a spot here also. Justins is west of Tucson and CCRV east of Tucson.

I personally would not stay at Voyagers for personal reason. It is a huge place with 1800 spaces (mostly park models) and you have to wear a name tag all the time. Justins and CCRV are much smaller with a 200+- sites.

We spent 3 months in Tucson last year. We visited several of the other rv parks where snowbirds stay. NONE were ever completely full and I doubt they are now. We stayed at the Voyager, which has amenities galore. We had some friends stay at Far Horizons and the sites were very tight and the price was high. Did you check the rvparkreviews?
