Hi,
Along Highway 16, just east of Mt Rushmore is 4 tunnels, each cut perfectly into the mountain to look directly at Mt. Rushmore! Stop at the 2nd or third one, and get pictures. The first and fourth are always really crowded by people who do not know about the other 4 tunnels, and stopped at the first one.
Also as you leave the Mt Rushmore parking area, you can turn right and go about 1/4 mile to a tiny parking area, and get a side shot of Washington!
I also stayed at Custer State park, even though it is not 'really' close, but I had a car to get back and forth, and it avoided driving the motorhome on as many tiny two lane roads. I ended up taking highway 16 several times in the fog to see the monument before a third trip to see it in daylight and see the monument through the tunnels!
Have fun!
Fred.

I havn't been everywhere, but it's on my list.
