Coming up from New Mexico (12-28-13) on I-25 and with the current traffic jams on I-70 ...... should I take US 50 over to Breckenridge ? ... or just stay on the freeways ?

Hope the OP is safe and warm. It isn't a pretty day to be driving to Breckenridge any way you go. According to CDOT I25, I70, US24 and CO9 are all snowy, snow packed, etc. We've got about 4" and still snowing lightly here in Buena Vista. Think I'll stay home and work on my income tax and watch football.

Gotta love 2milesup tone of post. If it is not a foot of fresh snow on the road, still snowing with visibility most likely less than 25', NO PROBLEM.

Heh,heh, heh. Love it. Oh, & yes I am familiar with Colorado winters. Back in the days DC (during children) we stayed at Ed & Perries B&B in Leadville while skiing Ski Cooper. Love the area.

In Colorado the DOT know how to deal with snow. When major highways are closed they don't stay closed long after the snow stops. I 70 was closed less than 1/2 hour after we had gone through returning from a ski trip once. It was miserable but most drove at a speed suitable for the conditions.

This is our preferred route when in Colorado Springs. Just watch the weather/road reports.

Depends on what you're driving and how comfortable you are with mountain driving in the winter. If you don't mind switchbacks and 2-lane roads, take I-25 to Pueblo then US 50 through Canon City to CO 9 all the way to Breck. Hoosier Pass will be the most challenging part of the drive, especially if it's snowing.

Otherwise, take I-25 to C-470 around the southwest Denver area, then I-70 to CO 9 in Frisco.

Enjoy your trip!

You would think Interstate 70 would be the best, but when I called Colorado.gov road advisory ..... the lady said to go US 50 !

This time of the year I'd stay on the interstates.
