Painting motor home cupboards

I have been watching Youtube pieces on painting our motor home cupboards and I am still not sure if painting the cupboards is a good idea because of the paper covered particle board used to make the cupboards.

Has anyone painted their cupboards and if so, could you provide me with some directions as to how to do it.

First it needs to be thoroughly cleaned, but do not soak. Then a quick dry primer sealer so it does not soak through, Kilz was mentioned a good choice, Zinsser bullseye is another. Then paint. The chance of failure is minimal.

Thanks riven 1950. Good information. I will try it.

Also Scott G, I intend to try it on the bathroom cabinet. If I mess it up, I can replace the cabinet.

You absolutely don't want to "sand" the paper veneer and even painting it can cause it to separate from the material under it.
If you proceed, test out the paint some place that's not so obvious - maybe the inside of some cabinet.

I have painted cabinets in mobile homes, which have similar paper / vinyl covered particle board cabinets, with success. Only problems I had were in some areas where the paper had peeled off or was really worn. In solid areas we cleaned, used a deglosser, then primed with oil base Kilz primer. Finish coat was a good quality semi gloss latex.

As stated above if the paper is missing or peeling it is more trouble. You have to sand the loose paper back to where it in firmly attached and then fill the area with water putty or something similar and sand smooth. This is labor intensive. Then prime and paint.

Yes I did check Youtube. A number of methods. Not sure they are applicable to the paper covered particle board that the cupboards are made of.
