2006 Dodge 2500 mega cab

We were looking to maybe get a new truck and ran into the mega cab. Loved the room and space since we have a daughter and 2 big dogs. My main concern is with the little teeny weeny bed and the payload. I was told payload is really low because the truck is heavy since it has the bigger cab. I know it would need a slider hitch but what do you all know about the payload and towing a 5er with it? Thanks

I've been looking at the '06 Megacabs as well - the payload numbers are kind of pitiful (even though it sounds like people's real-world experiences are it can handle higher weights fine).

The 2500 GVWR is 9000 lbs, and has a payload of <1600 lbs w/ 4WD (with the Cummins), or 2100 lbs w/ 2WD.

The 3500 SRW GVWR is 9900 lbs, so it's payload is 2600 lbs for 4WD and 3000 lbs for 2WD. Not terrible, but certainly not great ๐Ÿ˜•

Haha. Nice one. And I do kick myself for the gas when I should have done diesel.
My buddy does joke with me that his heavy Chevy diesel stock beats out my modded dodge.

Not all are bitter, only ones that had to settle for a Hemi when they wanted a diesel. 11mpg ain't bad but my Duramax gets 15mpg towing my 5er. Nuff said

The only warranty I have voided was anything to do with my gas tank and hoses since they were modified.
My truck goes in every 3500 miles for a check up and change and so far everything has been covered.
The dealership I go to worked with me on making sure everything that has been to the truck is with in my limits but not that it matters now as the truck is past the 3 year warranty.
But it only has 14,000 on it

And I am currently talking with the Good Sam People to make sure if I purchase their program it covers my whole truck.

Don't kid yourself that if you have a major issue that RAM/Dodge/Fiat will not void your warranty because of the Bulldog. Chris

Wow. There are some really doubtful/ rude people on here. Thought the RVing community was one of nice relaxed people. Apparently this place is just full of rude bitter people.

So I guess when you tow and have used many different rigs you are just used to nothing working properly.
So I guess shopping around and taking time to put together the right rig and getting it to work properly is something unheard of.

You all with the horrible gas mileage must be the people flying by me in the cruising lane just keeping the peddle mashed with such a fire under you to get where you need to go. I'm still young so I guess by the time I am your age I'll be yelling at the young families on here doing it right and enjoying their time away from work because I'll have nothing better to do but complain as well. Seeing as I'll be old and bitter too.

We don't live in a gear head kind of world anymore. It's digital where u can change your engine settings with the push of a button.

So for the amount of towing and distance me and my family and friends go with our awesome rig. It does pull awesomely and I do get great mileage. Sorry you all are full of negativity.

So I added my two cents in what works wonderfully for us to assist in what the original poster had asked and you all got so bent on it your not helping him out.

He does have a valid point to some degree. The tone here could be improved when disagreeing. I remember many years ago when my long departed father told me "it's OK to disagree, just be respectful of the other person and do not be rude to anyone". I am now older and retired. I don't think we are all old and bitter people, but the tone from time to time might lead a younger person to conclude that. Off my soapbox.

You can believe what you want, but you should read up on the bulldog system. I installed that in our truck shortly after purchasing it. You can use the device to reprogram aspects of your computer. It's a great little system. When we first put it in our truck started off with around 8mpg and slowly it has been climbing up. I think we are at the height of it now.
No I do not take my rig into the mountains. We go to Lake Ontario in September for a fishing trips with the guys. That trip knocks my mileage down a knotch or two. The nice part about the added tank is not having to stop and refuel means no getting back up to speed so I can maintain cruising speeds longer. Hence keeping my mileage up. i also do not go about 65 with my vehicle which keeps me in the green for mileage.
The point I was trying to make by posting is if you equip your vehicle the right way you can do what you want. I have added many different options to the truck to help with mileage and they seem to be paying off. Also my truck only pulls my trailer it is not a daily driver.
Sorry to the original poster for causing such a disruption in your topic.

So you were fine with voiding your warranty and becoming your own warranty station on a new truck??? Chris

If anyone is still talking about a Megacab, I had a 2006 Megacab 2500 with the Cummins and it was also manual transmission. The payload on mine was 1690 lbs so it was pretty low. That was one of the main reasons I upgraded to the 3500.

Look at the power and torque curves for a Hemi.

They were designed for performance (which they are very good at) not for towing.

I too have towed with a lot of different trucks/cars and different size loads and I HAVE NEVER NOT KNOWN that it was back there. As far as the Hemi goes it is a great motor, but..... that is where it stops. No gasser will ever, with no amount of mods pull like a diesel. If they would semi trucks would be gas powered.

Sorry, end of rant.

Sorry to have offended, it's just when someone states they're towing something and it's "Like it's not back there", or "don't know it's back there"....after towing for years and years and years, I can't buy into it and I've towed with gassers and diesels...I've had tuners on diesels and worked on an 8.1 Gasser, but no matter what I did, when towing in the mountains, I really did know "it was back there"...sorry for the hijack, but I'm not buying if I equip my 2500 just right that I could tow a 5er that is too heavy for it in it's normal configuration...but I tend to err to the side of safety.....sorry if I offended you .

Yes. In New Hampshire sits good at 11
New York is between 9-10 but that is once a year.
We go to New Hampshire multiple times.

I have a bully dog system installed, along with a K&N intake
, and a flow master exhaust. Also installed a Transfer flow 40 gallon
External gas tank to cut down on stops.

Pulls like nothing is back there

And I'm sure that once we have it loaded it is well over the 11,000.
I think the actual sticker on it is 11,300

Forgive my hesitance to bring myself to believe that your truck tows the 5er , "like nothing is back there".....guess you've never towed in the mountains is all I could say to that statement...with the extra fuel tank, that is an additional 480# in the bed of the truck. I'm truly impressed, though I find most of it hard to believe.
