30 and 50 amp genny question

Bought a 7500 W champion dual fuel generator for the home and has a 30 amp plug. I am ready to buy a fifth wheel that has a 50 amp service. I know I can buy a converter plug but they also offer this exact same gen in a 7500 W with a 50 amp plug.

Now my brain is working overtime 🙂

1) Does having an a 30 amp plug limit me and I am losing 20 A with the converter?

2) Is there a way to simply remove the plug on the generator and change it to a 50 amp plug and will I gain anything by doing that?

Thanks!

All of this info is accurate, but most generators that size do NOT have a TT-30R receptacle. Likely it is a L14-30R receptacle.

It is much simpler to convert a L14-30P to a 14-50R.

You gain absolutely nothing.

Probably not.
30 amp service is single phase 120 volts.
50 amp service is two phase 240 volts.

IF.....the gen has any kind of 220/240 3-wire (or 4 wire) output on it, an adapter might be possible.

If....the generator does NOT have any 220/240 outputs, then no it won't work.

If the hole is big enough you could put in a 50 A plug and gain 30 amps or make an adapter cable with a 50 A outlet if the hole is too small.

Chances are that the 30amp is 220 volt, which is a total of 60amp. Our 50amp service has a total of 100amps. Look at the recepticle, is it 4 prong?? If it is 4 prong, it is 220 volt.

Be sure this is what you will measure at the generator receptacle before plugging your 30A or 50A Trailer into it...

Here is another neat pictorial on how RV pedestals may be wired up...

Note the different wattage requirement between the 50A and 30A receptacles... The generator you have listed will not have enough wattage to fully operate both 50A ZONES in your 50A trailer. You will have to power down a bunch of appliances and systems to keep from tripping the generator local breaker...

You might also determine how the generator comes up with its 7500WATTS rating. Sometimes this is divided up between two 120V receptacles i.e. only 3750 Watts available at each receptacle... Note what the actual wattage rating would be if only one 30A receptacle is being used. I suspect only 3750WATTs...

Same idea would be for the 50A Receptacle. I suspect you would only get 3750WATTS for each of the two 50A zones in your trailer not the required 6000WATTS to fully operate both zones.

It will be a 30 amp, 240 volt plug, which is the limit you can get out of a 7500 watt genset- full 50 amp service is 12,000 watts.

If the wattage is the same a converter plug will work. If not, the smaller generator will only work for some items, not all at the same time.
