42 foot 5th Wheel on Route 191 Montana

Hello everyone,

My family is heading to West Yellowstone MT, via I-90 from the East Coast. We plan on turning south on Route 191 in Montana and would like feedback on if this route is doable with a 42' 5th Wheel. Any comments would be helpful.

I would suggest you get a truckers atlas. All the highways the truckers can travel on are marked in orange. I use mine all the time. If the road is not orange in the atlas I do not pull my 38' RV on it.

I will take your advice, thanks.

You will be fine on 191. The highway is very busy in the summer so traffic will be heavy but all types of RV's travel this road everyday.

X2 Just drove it Sunday from I-90 to West Yellowstone, with a 42' fiver. Numerous pull offs if you want to stop for lunch. Nice easy drive.

Well lets put it this way. 18 wheelers run RT 191 off I-90 to RT 287 north of West Yellowstone. Then follow RT 287 to RT 78 and on to US 20 at east end of Island Park, ID. or vice-versa. They don't generally follow RT 191 into West Yellowstone to US 20 except for local delivery and signage telling truckers to follow the above mentioned routes. By using the above mentioned routes, they eliminate I-90 and I-15 thru and around Butte, MT.

Yes, excellent advice. We got ours online and it's extremely helpful.

This is the best advise you will get! I am 3' shorter than you but I consult my Trucker's Atlas and stay on designated highways.

There is also a section that lists all low clearances for each state. This can come in handy if you have to get off of a designated roadway to get to a CG or some other destination for a short distance.

I have a Western Directory, but I also like to check out the Mile by Mile planning guide too.

Won't be a problem. I take our 40' fiver and dually crew cab on that road. At West Yellowstone today H and K were tarring and chipping the road with a pilot car escort. I don't know how far they are going or how long they are going to be there. If I see something, I'll post.

Get a copy of Mountain Directory West (there is also one for the East). Check the route you plan to travel and significant mountain passes will be described in fairly good detail.
