Big mistake

A couple weeks ago we went camping and stayed at an RV park. As I backed into the campsite a branch from a tree scraped the top of the roof. It left an abrasive mark about 8 feet long. I went up on the roof after we got home and look closely at the damage. It doesn't look like there is any penetration of the rubber membrane, however, there could be the slightest pin hole that I can't see. So I'm wondering if any of you have some suggestions on what I might do to ensure there is no leak. ie. would it be smart to place some white duct tape over the scraped area. Or, is there something better for this type of application? I really don't want to take the risk of a leak. If there is some product that I could put on the roof before it rains I'd like to do it.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I think they do make white and grey or black eternabond. So you need to let them know for sure what you want. At least on line I believe there is a option.

well that is a fine how-do-you-do! When I went to the RV Dealer the person in charge of the parts department showed me two boxes that she said contained Eternabond. I bought the cheaper of the two. Now that I look closely at it the package doesn't say Eternabond. It is some other brand. So, tomorrow I get to go back and exchange it.

Do they make Eternabond in white?
The top part is white the gray part sticks to the roof.

I also have used Eternabond in the past for a roof patch. Excellent product!

Another vote for Eternabond. I hated the skylight in the bathroom. I took it out 10 years ago, placed a piece of plywood in it's place and then put 6" Eternabond over that overlapping each piece by approximately 1". Painted it with the UV paint from Eternabond. Haven't touched it since and still holding as well as it did the day I put it on.

I also had a roof leak(s) where the endcaps met the rubber roof. After I made my repairs, I covered the joints with 6" Eternabond and UV paint. Again, no problems since.

Based on the quality of trailers and my experience with endcaps, the first thing I do to my next traile will be to cover those joints with Eternabond as a proactive measure.

I keep some extra Eternabond in my trailer for the "oops" situations while on the road. Haven't needed it yet, but glad it's there.

Eternabond. Did the exact same thing the OP did. Put Eternabond over (about 8 feet long) it about 10 years ago. Still holding strong when we sold it this year. When I told the prospective buyer about it he had no worries.

Another vote for Eternabond...clean the area, unroll the tape, apply it and never worry about it again...much faster and guaranteed to fix any leak, if there is one.

Yes, it is named "Liquid rubber Roof". It runs about $50. per quart and can be put on with a simple paint brush. You may be able to pick it up at a local RV supply, or dealership.

Simple to put on:

1. tape the area off about 4" outside the affected area.

2. mix the catalyst into the LRR EPDM material. It has to sit about ten minutes before applying.

3. Clean the area to be applied with denatured alcohol.

4. When cleaned area is dry, apply the EPDM liberally.

5. IMPORTANT, remove the masking tape before the EPDM cures!

6. Any left over product can be stored for a while in a freezer, especially if you feel a second coat is needed. It can be applied after 24 hours.

While you are at it, clean, tape off, and seal all lap joint protected
penetrations of the rubber roof, such as around sky lights and vent tubes. Also where the front cap and, or rear caps meet the roof. I've used it on two trailers and had excellent results.

I put an inch long tear I our roof and used enternabond tape to cover it. It was still on 7 years later when we changed trailers. Make sure the surface is clean and use a hard roller to help fuse the tape to the roof.
