I have asked for comments on this engine, since I recently bought one , a 2003 dually, not knowing it to be a 6.0.

NOW ..... I wish to MODIFY my question as follows .....

Have any of you actually OWNED one that DID NOT .... have serious problems with it ?

Thanks ... Richard

OP just got rid of a good truck for a turd based on internet hysteria.

I'm running a 2003 F350 DRW Lariat with a 6.0 powerstroke, over 174,000 on the clock and zero problems. I've addressed this engines weak spots and reasonably maintained it. You couldn't pay me what I have in this truck to go back to a 7.3

If I could find a chain long enough and strong enough I could drag a house off the foundation with it.

Yep. That tranny in the 1996 will eventually need replaced...it leaves you just as broke down as a Blown HG on a 6.0 and cost about the same...if not more...than taking care of the 6.0.

I think that this is the third or fourth time on this forum the Internet hysteria has caused Op's with great trucks to push the reset button this year.

Thanks!

Yeah that OP panicked for no good reason. The 6.0 chassis is far more comfy, as mentioned the torqueshift trans is a brute and all the gremlins in his engine may have been addressed in the last 11 years. Oh well.

Greene ..It had nothing to do with any PEER PRESSURE.
I do not recognize the existance of that, and never have ...(giant ego I guess)...but it does have to do with accepting knowledge from those who have already paid dearly for it. The transmission on my 'most recent' purchase has just had the transmission rebuilt.

You didn't happen to mention YOUR personal experiences with either of these engines. I welcome any experiences YOU have had with either.

Thanks to all who contributed to my question .... however ... yesterday, I sold the 2003 and purchased a 1996 FORD 7.3 Dually F350 with 214,000 miles on it.

I now feel a lot safer , owning it, and will be happy to put any money I need to , into repairs.

Too bad in a way ... the 2003 was a pristine vehicle, and something to be very proud of , but , far too risky to count on.

Again ... Thanks ... Richard

Wow! You really buckled to peer pressure there didn't you?
Not sure about that move without really giving the 6.0 a chance before hitting the panic button. I would have at least given it a fair shot before doing that. The 6.0 you had would outperform and out pull the snot out of the one you have now. The tranny in that 96 is far less superior also. Far less. But if your happy, that's all that matters I suppose.

WOO HOO good call!

Enjoy a nice dependable Ford diesel truck!

My favorite part of the OBS Fords is that the bed rails are lower to the ground. Much easier to reach over the side of the bed.

That kind of puts forums in perspective doesn't it! I was on the floor - best laugh in weeks!

Richard - My opinion is you probably over-reacted to some of this forum talk as you might have had a nice truck there. Good luck on your 7.3 - With over 200,000 miles, its probably already had the transmission replaced 4 or 5 times ๐Ÿ™‚ They sucked back then. The Torqueshift behind that 6.0 made that truck a tow machine.

Richard:

If you go to: The Diesel Stop dot com, "6.0L Power Stroke Engine & Drive Train" - you will find.... *LOTS* of *OWNERS* !!

You should find *ALL* the info you could ever want - by those who own 'em, have owned 'em, and made the repairs & 'fixes' to bulletproof" 'em!!..;)

Including those who have had "factory-buy backs", etc.

That AR9100 is great stuff for the 6.0. I've been running it for a couple of years. In fact, I went back to Rotella 15W dino. My truck didn't need both AR9100 and the 5W synth.

I may go back to the 15w during the summer months. But for the winter, the 5w greatly improved cold start ups and smoothness. It doesn't get terrible cold here for prolonged periods. I've read extensively though from numerous reputable sources where the synthetic (regardless of weights) drastically helps the 6.0s. The added detergents and such help the injectors and the synthetic doesn't sheer nearly as quickly as the Dino oils. And I agree so far on the Archoil 9100. And it gets rave reviews if your experiencing stiction issues.
