Gas Cylinders

Have you checked the service date on your gas cylinders lately??

The "in service" (either new or recertified) date is stamped on the collar, month and year. Cylinders more than 12 years old cannot be legally refilled under DOT (Federal) regulations. I think Transport Canada has the same rule. This applies to RV, BBQ grill, an any other cylinders.

The refill-jockeys at most retailers don't check, but I just had both of my 30# cylinders refused by a clerk who was paying attention.

My fault and I have ordered replacements, but interesting to know about.

The recert is good if you don't plan on refilling tanks on a trip through Canada. Their recert is much more intense than what you'll receive from your local supplier.

Once the 12 expires, I start trading for full ones. Trying to weasle the seller into newer tanks each time. A new 5 years just isn't that interesting. It's harder to find 30# swaps though.

If I'm correct a new tank is good for 12 years versus a re-certified tank which is only certified for 5 years. I guess you have to weigh the cost difference for a new tank (12 years) verses a re-certified tank (5 years). I am still on the fence as I am undecided which is best. :@

My local propane company recertified two 30# cylinders and threw the recert in with a tank refill.

I would get #30 recertified. #20 cylinders are easier to exchange at HD, Lowes etc and the clerks often let you paw through the cabinet to find the latest date. That is (out of date) a valid reason to exchange per the exchange companies.

I agree with the others advocating getting the tanks re-certified rather than buying new ones.

Around here recertify is only about 10 dollars plus gas. So unless the tank is all rusty I aee no reason to buy new ones.

Been awhile since you've refilled tanks?
