Hauler fuel tank help

Short story quick. I need help.

New used toy hauler. Single gas tank that feeds the genset fine and dandy. Gas pump for toys would not work. Sanded the pump gears and it would turn at least, but no gas coming out. Dropped the gas tank and took off the feed nozzle to the pump. Found that there was a check ball and spring in the aluminum nozzle that was stuck in the closed position. I think it was an emissions thing and I think it was keeping the gas from coming to the pump. Pushed out the check ball and put everything back together. Still no gas.

Filed the gears down again to get them to turn. Sounds like it's pumping fine, but nothing is still coming out. Weird thing is that when the pump is going, and the gas cap is on the tank, then the pump is taking the air out of the tank. You can hear it pop and compress as a vacuum is created in the tank. Still nothing coming out of the pump. Any advice?

My thoughts are that the pickup tube for the gas pump might have came off and maybe the vent tube is clogged? I"m kinda lost till I have time to drop the tank again.

Anyone had this issue too?

I wish that were the case. It was full when I tried it. I now have the tank nearly empty after running the genset while camping this weekend. I will probably get it out again in a few days to look at it. I will spec out my gears too to see where they are.

Thank you,
Maverick

Some double duty fuel tanks will only let the gas pump draw down the tank to a certain amount, and leave the rest for the gen set. Usually about a third of a tank. Could that be it?

Sure sounds like a pick up issue. I might try holding fuel hose up high and backfill with gas to prime system. Might help if it's just a prime issue ?

P.S. for reference, when my pump stoped spinning gears were swollen width wise to .906 I sanded down to .899 width and it seems to be working fine. Ordered a new gear set to keep in hauler. They mic'ed out at .901

Thanks Fred. Very, very little gas does make it to the pump, but I suspect that it is sucking air too. Gonna have to pull it again and figure it out. I will call transfer flow to see if they have any advice.

We have verified the pump is pushing and not sucking.

Could the pump be running backwards?

From your description, it sounds like you are not sucking gasoline, but the vapors above the fuel level. Are you sure that the refueling intake is below the level of the gasoline? There might also be a crack in the tubing, as it would be easier to pull air from a crack above the fuel level than the fuel itself. Though you probably would have a powerful enough pump to pull both 1 GPM fuel - even if there is some vapors coming out with it.

I am also worried that there would be something still stuck, such as another check valve or device made to keep the fuel from leaking out while the pump is turned off.

You might want to contact Transferflow.com because they used to build fuel tanks for several toy hauler manufactures. You might get lucky and they know a solution to your problem. But they will be closed until Monday.
