new battery voltage

Just purchased a new Everstart Maxx 24DC battery for my crusader 295. It has a 3/15 sticker so it is a fresh battery. I placed it on workbench when I got home and checked voltage. It read 12.5 volts. I put a commercial charger on it and charged for 90 minutes. Charger set at 40 amp setting. After this charge the battery checked 13.3 volts. I will recheck in the morning after it sits overnight. My question is: What volts should a new fresh battery show? Before and afer charging.
Thanks
Dave

When I periodically check my batteries while sitting idle over the winter, I am happy when they show 12.74v (two 6-volts at 6.37v & 7-years old).

Those voltages are for a battery at rest with no load. At rest means it sat for 24 hours with no load or changing. Discounted from the vehicle is best!!

If the charger is an automatic charger, 40 amp is no problem. Once it gets near full charge the charger will cut back to a lower charge rate.

I may be incorrect, but isn't setting the charger at 40 amp, a bit excessive, especially if the battery has almost a full charge? This weekend, I also charged my house batteries, but only had it set at 12 amps, and only did it for one hour out of precaution.

If I remember correctly 2.1 volts per cell or 12.6 volts is considered a fully charged battery. Your reading of 13+ volts is surface charge and will drop once a light load is placed on the battery
