Tread Separation on Maxxis M8008

Has anyone experienced tread separation on Maxxis M8008 tires? I bought 4 of them in 2010 and just replaced 2 this past weekend do to separation. I am concerned because the 2 tires in question were on the same side of the 5th wheel. The tires are ST 225 75R15, 80PSI. I always check the PSI before a trip, so that was correct.

Any input of thoughts as to whether this is a "tire" issue or a possible axle issue? Also, whenever I level side to side, I always have to put the side in question on a 2" board to level the coach, even on "level" pavement campsites.

So by "built-in" tire damage, do you mean poor assembly skills, inferior raw materials, inferior design, or just somebody dropped the cargo container on the pier!?

Had tread separation on all 4 Maxxis ST tires a few yrs ago. My TPMS saved the day when one tire lost air pressure and I was able to stop w/o damage to tire or fiver. I didn't see any separation and tried to get the tire fixed. Local tire shop found separation at the bottom of the grooves where tread meets the sidewall and extended about 25% of the tire circumference.

I debated what to do about the remaining 3 tires, but decided to replace them all. Less than 40 miles to the nearest Discount Tire store and those tires were separating and ballooned enough to rub the fender skirt. None lost air pressure, but all 3 showed tread separation identical to the first tire. Tires were made in Thailand with date code showed 40 months at time of failure.

I run LT tires now.

The other option is of course to just bite the bullet and buy a set of LT tires and be done with it.
Or it was a road hazard and OP just needs a new tire free under the road hazard warranty.
Also MAXXIS may improve the tire line if they get more feedback on failures that are not completely shredded.

Tread separations don't just happen overnight. They are most often caused by some form of tire damage - inflicted or built-in - that will eventually cause the tire to fail completely.

A professional tire expert can determine the exact cause of the damage to the tires shown in the pictures. I would contact your area Maxxis representative to see if they are interested in examining them. Once they have examined them they may be able to pinpoint the cause or causes of the damage.

I know they have factories there, as well as Taiwan, China and Viet Nam. I just did a search and found a post from RV.net, supposedly a quote from Maxxis, that says that (as of May, 2012) all ST production was in Thailand. Given that the tires in question here were 2010 production, I doubt that they were made anywhere else. I simply think that more and more are showing up on the road and that's why we're starting to see reports of failures. Bet the =percentage= failure rate hasn't changed at all. I know I was surprised as hell when I had the BFG Rugged Trail TAs on my truck separate, so even a supposedly good tire company can have an issue. FWIW, they're the only BFGs I've ever had fail.

1HC, why don't you post a pic of the tire data from the sidewall? I do believe that Maxxis moved some production on to mainland China. Would be interesting to know if these might have been produced there. FWIW, it only seems to be the past couple years that reports on problems with Maxxis have started cropping up. No way to know if it's because of production issues or the fact that many, many more of them are on the road now. I =still= think that Maxxis is still far superior to all other ST tires and would be running them myself had I had time to have them installed last time I needed tires.

This tread separation failure looks just like the failure we had on our OEM Mission ST tires.

Close to the edge is the cap coming off completely. Chris

OP:
Have you looked and felt in the top of the fender well for something that may have gouged the tire?

The OP pictures show a very common failure of trailer tires. One can look above, beside, at the axles and at the road, but that is not where this issue lies. Look at the tire itself! Was it ran low on air at some point or is it extremely overloaded. If not, then it just might be the nature of the animal you are dealing with.

Has anyone experienced tread separation on Maxxis M8008 tires?

A quick search shows 19 RV.net members with Maxxis tire issues. Other trailering type forums are similar.
Tire separation seems to be the leading issue which is a typical ST tire issue..........
At some point I would upgrade to a LT tire.
I did many years ago and with several hundred thousand miles on trailers of all types I simply don't have those type issues anymore.
