Two Tire Questions

My current Goodyears (LT 235/85R16 G Rated) are 6 years old. They look great and are always parked under my RV carport in the shade and on asphalt when not in use. Based on what I've read here they should be replaced due to age. Is that true even if not in the sun?
Secondly, the Goodyears are now nearly $400 each. I just had Hancook 19.%" tires put on my 450. Has anyone had any experience with them on a heavy Fiver? My HitchHiker weighs 16K. Thanks folks.

I had a time frame I had to get the repairs done in before heading out again. My ins. Agent said get it fixed and Goodyear paid all repair expenses. No increase in insurance cost. Will be using rebate to put tires on truck..I put American made Lt tires on 5r.At this point no one is out except Goodyear when it comes right down to it.

I suppose we have to admit that it's good that GY pays for these damages. But, it makes one wonder if this is all driven by a simple risk analysis on their part. In other words, they may be saying inside their own conference rooms, yes, we know it's a junk tire, but it's still more profitable to just pay out a few claims rather than actually improve the quality of the product.
As I have stated before in these threads my opinion on this is the best way to get their attention is to vote with my dollars and go elsewhere.

Going elsewhere would be to the new improved Carlisle or TowMax with the new Nylon overlay??? News flash, GY added that to the Marathon years ago! Most likely at the Circle S release of new improved Marathon's in the late 90's-early 00's!

Chris

No Chris, going elsewhere for me was to go to LT tires on my camper, equipment trailer and both horse trailers.
Sorry, but I'm just not impressed with ST tires.

First claim probably does not change rates much but……….have a second claim and thru the roof! And you just can't go to another company, they will get ya also.

They paid me for the one tire and refunded my deductible on my Insurance and paid my Insurance company back. They also sent a letter stating: that if I will purchase new tires in excess of the 503.36 I spent on the other three replacements, on either Goodyear, Kelly or Dunlop, before ll-7-14 they will rebate me the 503.36. Wow! Surprise me!

Yep, you let them off the hook and took the major hit on your insurance. If you would have pushed they would have covered everything.

Chris

That IS a fact!

Fatal error was turning it into his insurance instead of GY in the first place.

My Dad had two or three GY G's go on his 96 HH Premier that were pre 07 dated and they paid for the tire and ALL damages no question. He still runs GY G's with many thousand miles and no problems since.

People like this is what has caused me to rarely visit this site anymore. Which is a shame because there's a wealth of good people with some good advice available.
But this is just a smart you know what answer with no use what so ever. I think she made a good legitimate post that is perfectly sensible. Then comes the know it all resident troll to try and belittle someone.

Very sad.

X2.
She has a valid point as its been my personnel experience with Goodyear they have a poor track record when it comes to honoring their tire warranty. And when we look around on different websites that a trailer is the prime vehicle its the same.
Hell I've had Goodyear actually tell me they would not honor any more of their new tire warranties on my road trailers. They were glad to sell me 28 of their tires but didn't like replacing them when they failed.

I doubt Goodyear would pay for damage caused by a 6 year old tire. One or two, yes, but six, most likely "No Way". But then again, what do I know.

You really think all the tires will burst at the exact same time? Or that the owner would change one tire and run the others? And when the second one blows, change that one and leave the others? Etc., Etc., Etc, and Etc?

Oh... I guess you might be right. "What do you know?"

Quit being a tight wad........
and buy tires that don't have a history of causing damage, and the requisite down time for repairs (no matter who pays)..:S

.

You are correct! On pre 07 they did have problems. Since then they have been very trouble free tires.

I may have been a bit cranky there….sorry!

But if you have had good luck with something then why change?

Goodyear does not state a specific replacement age for RV tires because there are many conditions that dictate a tire's life span. Some factors that influence how long a tire will last are:

Usage per year - more frequent usage will result in longer life
Vehicle storage practices (6 months loaded with little or no rotation is not good!)
Usage in warmer climates can also impact a tire's overall life due to greater extreme ozone exposure

Sidewall Weathering

Weather cracking is a naturally occurring condition that results from exposure to heat and sunlight. Goodyear's warranty for weather cracking is four years from purchase date (or four years from manufacture date if proof of purchase is not available).

Weather cracking is common in RV tires from all manufacturers.

Appears as crazing and or cracking in the flex area of the sidewall
Probable causes of sidewall weathering
— Long periods of inactivity or storage
— Direct exposure to air and sunlight
— Exposure to high levels of ozone (smog, electrical generators)
— Excessive washing or dressing using alcohol or petroleum based cleaners

When should the tire be replaced?

Cracks > 2/32" deep
Internal components of tire (steel or fabric body plies) are visible

Without evidence of weather cracking, use the following as a gauge:

Usage per year --More frequent usage will result in longer life
Vehicle storage practices (6 months loaded with little or no rotation is not good!)
Casing quality --Absence of repairs, liner wrinkles, weather cracking, sidewall scuffs or cuts.

The above "cut and paste" is from Goodyear's RV tire webpage. FWIW.
