This is directed more towards the part-time travelers rather than full-time due to usage, but I look forward to reading everyone's input. I'm curious how long everyone has their 5th wheel before upgrading. I know some people that change vehicles like underwear and just wondered if trailer life is the same.

We bought our Cardinal fiver in 2003 when it was one year old and we still have it. We have looked for another unit, but we can't seem to find one that fits our needs as well as this one does.

I just put a new roof on it this summer which was my fault for not keeping a closer check on the caulking which resulted in some rot. Other than routine maintenance and changing to 16" rubber and disc brakes it has required nothing.

We run hot and cold on usage. Some years a couple of weeks, some years more. We just finished a 51 day trip to Utah for example.

We bought our 83 Class C in 1990, sold it in 2009, and replaced it with a 2010 5th wheel that we currently have. We tend to keep stuff a while.

My fiver is 11 years old, I have had it for 7 years. Three months ago we decided to look at newer ones but couldn't find one we liked as much
as far as layout and price, we would have paid a minimum $15,000 to upgrade and weren't really gaining anything. So I had the brakes re-done, suspension re-bushed, gas checked and slide mechanism replaced as it was giving me problems. Total cost to date $1500. We may replace/upgrade the window blinds at maybe $800 to $1000, so for $2500 we will be happy campers for a few more years.

I think a lot of us posted the list just to paint a bit of a picture of length of ownership. Now, if we were talking trucks I think you would have us all beat! :B

PS nice to see you posting; I haven't seen much from you lately.

True about the trucks:)...Been trying hard to get use to retirement. But I'm going to give it my best:B

We kept a used 25 ft. Jayco 5th wheel 10 years before going to our present 30 ft. Class C. Trading RV's is very expensive because they depreciate like crazy. Like a car but worse and larger dollar amounts.

Bought a 1993 Jayco 215SD FW in 1993 and sold it in 2011, so owned and used it for a little over 18 years. We now have owned our 21012 Jayco HT 26.5 RLS for almost five years, having bought it in January 2102.

Since 1965 we have always had multiple RV's at the same time. The longest owned follows for our 5th wheels alone:

1. Our 1993 special built Carriage Carri-lite in our signature and still owned, hauled, and used every winter for our Florida trips for approx 2-1/2 months each year. That 5th wheel has been owned and used by us for 23-1/2 years now and have zero plans to replace it Carriage is no longer made and it still looks new inside and out because we take care of our things properly. Carpet even still looks good as we used carpet runners in the high traffic areas. A very high quality RV! All appliances are still working fine and the only repairs ever needed in all those years due to failures were a new circuit board for the furnace 5 years ago, a new awning fabric and new rubber roof put on 3 years ago. Tires of course also replaced as needed.

This 5th wheel has over 100,000 miles of actual traveling on it as it gone to virtually all the U.S. states and some of the provinces in Canada and once to Alaska in it's earlier years but now we use our big Lance TC for that long distance travels.

2. 1991 Carriage 36' Chaise model 3 axle 2 slide outs purchased new that we'd still own if it hadn't had a tree fall on it in very late 2006 while parked on land we own and our ins totaled it. Bought the carcass back and sold it to a close friend who has worked on repairing RV's for over 35 years and he spent an entire winter rebuilding it properly in a heated building and it's simply beautiful yet and has been their summer home in a resort since in 2007. We owned and used this Carriage 5th wheel a lot for our get away home for dirt bike riding in the warm months fun and snowmobiling in the winter. Nearly 16 years of being owned and used so much by us and it's had a new life since then too.

3. 1988 Carriage 35' Conestoga 5th wheel owned and used for about 10 years. 2 axle with aluminum siding with one slide and then was sold as it wasn't being used hardly at all anymore like it once had and it wound up sitting on our land with the 1991 Carriage. Besides, we had our other 2 new Carriages anyway and also our truck camper too.

So: 23+ years, 16 years, and 10 years of excellent service from 3 of our 5th wheels. Wish RV's were still built like they used to be and we'd be very tempted to buy a new one too but still will not part with our big Lance TC or our 1993 Carriage Carri-lite. No one type of RV does everything we want to do the best and is why we have multiple RV's. Just completed our 52nd year of lots of RV'ing and not about to stop anytime soon and why should we? Well, maybe in another 52 years we will reconsider...
