This isn't true if you have to purchase your own health insurance. In that case, vehicle registration, state taxes, etc. pale in comparison to health care costs.

I estimated registrations fees for my trailer and truck for NV. Almost $1000 total for both. That's more than what I pay in CA.

I considered (and may still) changing my domicile to NV from Fl, one big reason being the cost of auto insurance. While NV does have a bizarre vehicle registration fee scale, the cost of auto insurance was quite a bit lower, and like Fl, no state income tax.
I spent some time in the Reno area, and I second a lot of what Garymunson said. Except for the dust, I found it to be pretty liveable. Real estate is expensive, but it is equally or more expensive in Florida, especially rentals (and try finding a nice RV site in the winter in Fl south of Orlando, for less than a grand a month).
X2 on the lack of bugs and critters in NV. So far I have spent most of my summer fighting spiders, frogs, and ants that have invaded my camper, and I'm not even in the woods.

To your other question, haven't heard good or bad about the mail service in Pahrump.

I never understood why NV often isn't considered for along with SD, FL, and TX for domicile. No state income tax and no vehicle inspection in most counties. If I were to go full-time, NV would be high on my list as a central place to many of the areas I'd like to visit/travel through. It would be convenient for health care (compared to SD/FL/TX)...

Nevada's vehicle registration fee is based on MSRP which could be pricey for a new vehicle.

However, currently, ACA Anthem BCBS PPO plans are available in 15 out of 17 counties.

When I am asked the question about why I have South Dakota plates I tell people that to my mind what they should look for is the state with the LOWEST AUTO INSURANCE rates.

Unless you're under 65 and have to buy your own health insurance.

Then currently FL is your only choice.

OK so now I am back to Nevada. Anyone use J&B Mailservice in Pahrump?

We also use SD and I think any any of the mail forwarding services that have been around for awhile all do a good job. Many of their websites will have more information regarding licensing, registration and establishing residency. Get signed up and start using your address before going in person to get your drivers licenses. In lieu of utility bills from a house, you will be required to have 2 pieces of mail that have been addressed to and received at your SD address.

We are considering SD as our domicile now. Any advice on using Americas Mailbox? Does the PBM address cause any problems?

My vote is for South Dakota. Have been a resident since 2005. Low insurance,
no State Income Tax, no persona property tax, reasonable licensing fees for
MH and car. Driver's license can now be renewed on line with some regulations.
Great place to "live". A very friendly "full-timerpstate. Would recommend
Dakota Post in Sioux Falls for mail service and professional hel

We lived in NV and vehicle registration is high. All the mail forwarding services in SD are great, different levels of service. We have used My Home Address in Emery for 10 years, always helpful and friendly. Reasonable cost. Tell them Jan Wooley sent you. Call several and ask what services they offer, we like the small town friendly feel of My Home Address

Here's a pretty useful link on South Dakota domicile.

Here's a pretty good article on different levels of "moving out of the state". I found it interesting.

Thank you all for your input. It looks like SD is our best bet. I checked and my health insurance is available in SD. We will be on a fixed income and taxes is an issue.

I never thought about the insurance angle. Am I correct to assume that what ever state your domicile, vehicle registration and driver's license is.... that you also have to have insurance from that state?

I have a friend who lives in MO but spends his time mostly in California as a camp host and will be selling his house in MO and looking to SD for his domicile, registration and license.

Addressing your first paragraph.

You do not have to BUY insurance from an insurance company in your domicile state. My domicile state is Florida and I buy my insurance from Miller Insurance (Independent Agency) in Oregon - I ended up going with National Interstate. I have my Florida address on everything - DL, registration, etc.

The actual insurance company (GEICO, Progressive, National Interstate, etc) decides where they will write insurance policies (Florida, Ohio, Texas, etc).

I have also been told that even moving into a different county in the same state can have an effect on what you pay for auto insurance.

What you say may be true in some instances in some states. Insurance regulations differ from state to state.

But no matter where you write the check you will find they have set the premiums based on your home address (state) so it doesnt do you any good. When you call an 800 number of lets say Nationwide to get insurance you may be talking to someone physically in New Jersey. Your credit card transaction will be done in NV or SD. But they can ONLY write the Policy with a company licensed to do business in your home (domicile) state. And that policy will reflect the prices set for that state.
