My SD drivers license expires next month (April).
What is the latest information on renewal for us full time RVers We have renewed once by mail, but man....5 years goes by fast !
A side trip to SD is not in our travel plans, (yet). But flexibility is an advantage of being retired.
Thanks in advance for your information.

What happens if you get pulled over since your license will be expired? Do you just give copy of extension to officer with your expired license?

No need to the officer will confirm an extension, but just in case have some paper.

That makes sense! I have been licensed in SD for just over a year so all this is a while down the road!

That's what I would do, it make sense.

Same here. It's nothing new to the officer.

Why don't you call the DMV and ask them? I am always amaze when people can easily call and get the straight story from the DMV and do not do it. Sorry soap box time

OP here, that is what we did. They were very helpful and easy to deal with. (Some other states give the DMV a bad name.) The lady told us everything we needed to do and we had the forms, we needed to get 90 day extensions, by email within an hour. We will go there later in the year to get new licenses.
Our first renewal were done through email and US mail,5 years ago.

Renewal of a driver license or ID card. If your driver license or ID card HAS A GOLD STAR, you must provide the following for a new license:

South Dakota driver license or ID card,

Two documents proving your residential address (must be less than one year old).

Non-U.S. citizens and TRANSFERS FROM OTHER STATES must provide proof of lawful status in the U.S. (such as U.S. certified birth certificate, U.S.
passport/passport card, certificate of citizenship/naturalization, permanent resident card, employment authorization card, or foreign passport with visa/I-94).

If your name has changed, you will need to provide proof of the name change (marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order).

If a person uses a mail forwarding company (PMB) that person unless they have a home there will not be able to produce documents to prove a residence in most all cases, there may be some rare exceptions.

Yes you can renew by mail but only if you have been there overnight in a campground or hotel / motel in the past year.

Hello all

From what I have read the renew by mail will not work if you use a mail forwarding service and travel in a RV unless you have been in the state in the past year. So I think for most of us we will just go there every 5 years.

Sometimes it's nice to have a little background information/advice before calling the official source. It can provide a framework for the discussion, and might bring up issues or alternatives to discuss that might not be obvious if you just call up the DMV cold.
