Using family member address?

What is the effect on a family member if we use there address for our permanent address while we fulltime? I don't want to ask my sister and her husband if it has some sort of effect. They live in fla. And we will eventually settle there,so just thinking why use mail service if they r ok with it. Thoughts please. Thanks Tara

Jim R 1, it was short term, 4 months as stated in post. No it certainly wasn't to save, it was to see how it would work out. It worked well, but we didn't like imposing after we thought. Only paid for mail service for 14 years now so what would have short term mattered?

I think the effect would be "why did we let ourselves get into this" because you did not want to pay for a mail service and use your family.

Short term maybe

We just got an email from the Escapees. They are in fairly good shape. The mail service is shut down today and tomorrow. They hope to have the mail up running on Thursday if the mail trucks can get back and forth to Houston.

When we took off fulltiming, we thought it would be just for a year. Due to homeschooling and keeping our school district, we asked friends to do it. They're lovely people, but weren't the most organized. We often got some of their mail and I'm sure pieces of ours got lost.

All told, I wouldn't opt to use family or friends if this is your life goal. Just use a mail service- it'll be better for you and all involved. ๐Ÿ™‚

Speaking of Escapees, looks like Livingston TX is getting hit pretty hard.

You are going to impose upon them - if they are agreeable, no problem. But, what if they decide to move? Or they are ill, etc. We could have used our daughter's address in Texas, but she has her own life and I do not want to impose on her; plus they have moved a couple of times during the past 11 years and it would have been a real pain for us. Much better to have a mail forwarder who knows what fulltiming is about, in and area where local officials understand fulltiming.

We also did not want to impose on family though we already had TX residency. Also, in using Escapees when we do get jury duty notices, all we have to do is call and tell them we're Escapees and out of state. Easy.

We have full timed for 14 years. Just before full timing we were gone for 4 months and asked a relative to receive the mail. No problems, they didn't mind doing it. But during those 4 months we asked ourselves why in the world did we inflict this situation on them. Maybe they want to go away for a week or two? Somebody gets sick and they have a whole lot more to do and worry about other than our stupid mail. You call them to check on mail, just maybe it doesn't suit them at the time or that could be reversed. No way would we ask a relative or friend to do this endeavor! We personally think it is a PITA for those receiving the mail even though they may not let on.

Technically if they wanted to nit pick it may come under dwelling code as to number of persons occupying the building etc. NO, it's probably not a stretch, you need a permit to change a dish washer or faucet or water heater in many counties.

I am an attorney, but not familiar with Florida law. Generally, Florida is real strong with Homeowner's rights, and is a contributory fault state. None of this should have any affect on your relatives, however. You will not be residing there, so Florida recognizing that as your domicile, or your previous state recognizing your new domicile may be an issue. Do not allow anyone residing in that household to drive any of your vehicles, and do not drive any of theirs. Since you are a member of that household, most insurance companies will not insure a member of the same household unless listed on the policy as a driver. Also, if a member of that household should fall getting in or out of your RV, you will not be covered under your liability insurance. Also, be sure to tell your Florida insurer about your travel plans; that you will not be residing in the household, and the vehicles will not be garaged at the household.

You need to abandon your current domicile and establish your new domicile at the relative's address. Record everything at the new address including voting, driver's licenses, vehicle registrations, local bank address, library card, etc. File your federal taxes using that address. If you get tagged for jury duty show up or request whatever exemption might be available.
