crossing canada

I am planning to enter Canada at Port Huron Mi and exit Canada at Niagara Falls NY. what can I expect to encounter at the Canada boarder about the food that is in my 5th wheel trailer. I do not plan on stopping in Canada. Also what about a dog and a handgun? thank you for any info you can provide. we will be crossing Canada around July 8,2015

For anyone crossino Bluewater Bridge at Port Huron, Michigan and Sarnia, Ontario. Expect delays from now until July, west bound side closed for repair work.

Long Story and Internet rumours short... Do your homework.

If I was to post anything on the DUI, I would say it works the other way around.. A DUI in Canada means you are refused into the U.S. I didn't think it worked the other way.. But, to be honest I have never tested the theory so typing this is just another rumour.

If it was me and I was just trying to save time, I would take the 5 hour route and just avoid the hassle.

The handgun is going to be the bigger problem.

tony...man...that is something. huh..well who knows. They may have had their records expunged? And one does have to wonder, eh? I'd be the lucky guy that drove north to Alaska without hassle, only to get tagged coming back into Canada at the Alaska/BC border. Wouldn't THAT be a deal.

God I love these pots. Then, when the guillotine finally drops they go screaming. I guess they don't carry a spare either...never had a flat. Never check the gun...never loaded.

People are just so...so..I don't know what to call it, really. I wonder how many border 'issues' are as a result of.."well, my friend said...."


People need to be smarter and call the respective border services offices and ask the actual question. Or not. It does make for good tv.

I think they are just unaware that there could be a problem. And a couple of them have probably crossed 100 times over the years...so yeah they will be shocked. I think I will suggest they drive their own vehicle from now on, that way I don't have to take them back home and can continue with my fishing. Seems odd, the agents are obviously looking at a computer screen at the booth, they know when I last came and went, etc. Just makes me wonder when the DUI info pops up, or are the records somehow incomplete. If, for any reason, they get pulled aside for secondary inspection, there will be a problem... especially if they try to lie about it.

When it comes to an offense, they treat the offense as if it has been committed in Canada. It doesn't matter if it's not a felony outside of Canada if it is here

Different countries = different laws...
Criminal information is widely shared between U.S. and Canada at the border.

You can bring guns into Canada, you just need to do the research so you are in compliance with their laws. Guns fall into three categories:
Non restricted- most rifles and shot guns. Requires a permit and there is a fee.
Restricted- most hand guns. Reguires a permit that must be obtained ahead of time.
Prohibited- not allowed.

Do a search on Google. KNOW BEFORE YOU GO!!

Forget the handgun. The allowance for bringing a pistol into Canada involves being in a competition. You can cross with shotguns or rifles with the proper paperwork and even that assumes you need it for protection from bears, etc....not protection from humans. I have known numerous people who crossed with past DUI's, my understanding is that it is a DUI inside Canada that means you will never enter again. Could be wrong though.

DUI is the big thing at the border. Getting into the US with a DUI doesn't seem to be a problem, but they will guaranteed send you back if you, or anyone you have with you, has one trying to come up here. Even President Bush Sr. needed special permission to visit the Prime Minister here while he was President because of a DUI from back in the 70's.
