Drove our 1990 to get gas 24 miles round trip. Arrived at our driveway and it wouldn't go into gear (none). Turned off, went back out and it drove fine. Decided to go to carwash and it wouldn't go into gear again. Any ideas as to problem? Automatic transmission was not slipping just stopped no forward & reverse. Thank you.

Yeah, you definitely do not want it to quit on the freeway.

Get it checked out by mechanics. Go directly to the shop. Do not keep gambling. Do not pass go or collect $200.

be more specific

do you get R, N D ,2,1 ?

if you put in D and rev..does the motor rev freely like no load or does it strain...in R?

if the fluid level correct

are you parked on level ground

the more detailed you can be- it helps to rule out possible causes

you can't assume this will fix itself...cause when it fails it won;t fail in front of a tranny shop

linkage seems ok, fluid ok, pink & sweet smelling...no sounds from trans, motor revs.....maybe electrical?

is the gear lever working as usual- does it seem to move a linkage...do you hear stuff moving when you move the lever?
( I once had my linkage get funky on a long drive across the desert...and found out when i stopped for gas...luckily able to fix with a found bent nail)

what happens when it doesn;t move- just revving?

fluid level?
