2 year old tires - small cracks

Hello,

My friend is leaving on a three week cross country trip soon. He replaced his tires 2 years ago and noticed these cracks recently. The tire shop says not to worry that they are fine. These have already been replaced once for this same issue. Do you agree these are fine or of concern? I am asking for him, I normally post in the travel trailer section and I am not familiar with Class A tires.
Thanks!

Looking at you signature it appears you have a TT not a MH. If that is correct your may have ST rated tires which are notorious for failures and cracking. Again, if this a a TT you might get the best answers in the TT forum.

I think he is asking for a friend that has a class A with these tires on it.

Read the OP again. He's asking for a friend who has a motor home.

No, no, no.....not based on that alone.

The condition is commonly called "surface checking" and is very common, especially on larger size tires.

It's unlikely that any of the "cracks" will become more than 1 mm deep and if so they will be fine. After a few more years you might notice that the cracks are getting longer and deeper. THEN is the time to think about replacement.

By all means do check the date code though, which will give you and idea of how close to watch them.

I'm not driving on tires that look like that. I'd bet those tires sat on a shelf for years before he bought them "new". Look at the DOT code.

I agree the cracks do not look that severe, but I wouldn't expect to see that on a 2 year old tire. Are they covered when not in use? I would check date and then also ensure they are properly inflated.

That's about how the 8 year old tires that were on our motor home when we purchased it. I replaced them first thing.

X2. Tell your friend to find the date before making a decision.

I'd change them now. What was the production date stamped on the tire? They look old man, like a retread. If these are on a 5th wheel then not sure, I would replace a tire like that on my Class A.

The cracks do not look severe but I would still keep an eye on them and make sure that they are not run under-inflated at all. The cracks are a concern tho since they are happening on two year old tires. I have seen much older tires that look better.

I think the tire shop is correct - those are OK. But I would suggest your friend monitor them.

But the question is, if the tire shop replaced them once for the same issue, why would they not replace them again? Is it a matter of degree? Or was it because the shop replaced them just to be nice?
