air compressors

I was wondering what air compressors some of you are using to air up your motorhome tires. We have a gas MH so no built in air comp.

sure, but why tax your 12v system with a 180 amp draw when you have 110v available which is far more efficient?

They aren't cheap. But extremely portable and will fill anything. Top off ours all the time. Used for many years. Buildt very well. Can use the toad battery or MH battery to run it.

Far more capable? They're both capable. Are you talking about filling a flat tire? Then yes the AC will give you more CFM ... When you reach higher tire pressures. But most people aren't filling a flat tire on their MH, they're topping off a couple pounds. It's takes less than 15 seconds a tire to get ours topped off ( no more than a lb or two off).

I'm just not seeing the AC powered heavy bulky compressors are that important for tire "topping off". If you pulling lug nuts or shooting nails then I totally agree.

I too have a pancake compressor. It never leaves the garage anymore.

Several people have mentioned what gallon compressor they have. I have posted several times before if you are just going to use it for tires, get rid of the tank you don't need it. will save space and weight.

This Porter Cable CMB-15 has been my favorite since we got it for our 5th wheel. I kept it because it does 150 psi, whereas our on-board air stops at 110 psi.

Regardless of what you get, compare CFM! You can sure waste a lot of time waiting for your compressor to recharge the tank if is is a low flow. If I remember, this Porter Cable recharges from 0 in about 30 seconds with it's 2.0 SCFM.

I had a big Ridgid contractor type compressor which really did the job, but it was just too heavy to lug around and needed to be tilted to get it into the basement. I sold it on CL and got enough to buy a new Porter Cable pancake. It was the best of the big box brands at the time. Works great, but it does cycle a lot.

I have a small 175 PSI compressor I keep at my storage location, but I don't carry it on the road. I have a 12 volt compressor that is designed for Truckers that I bought at a truck stop. It has to be clipped directly to the battery (I have used the toad battery) and it will go up to 200 psi. But it does take a long time if the pressure is way down. I think I've only used it twice and one time I had a nail in the tire. So I pumped it up enough to get me to a tire shop to fix it.
