Back-up camera shutting down.

I have not researched this problem at all, just happened to notice it recently. Looking back, I seem to remember this happening one time before, but it either went away or I failed to notice it again.

We have a 30' Gulfstream Ultra Supreme 2005 class A. In normal driving, the rear view camera works fine, I use it to keep an eye on the toad behind us as we drive. I have used it several times as a rear-view when backing up, to get lined up and such.

For some reason, last time I started to back up, when I put trannie in reverse, the camera went black. Did not power off, just went black. Moved tran back our of reverse, it comes on immediately. into reverse, it goes black again.

Seems weird, as in reverse is when you really need it.

Has anyone else ever heard of this problem?? There are no connections to the monitor except the normal power and camera wires. no feed from transmission selector.

Can't tell you if i thought of this or read it, probaly read it but lets say you wanted to add a auxiliary camera to the rear of your enclosed car trailer as in my case and you had two ports on the back of your monitor screen, while both ports give you a screen A,B, and a selection button on your monitor while driving forward its possible you may not want this option in reverse so port B has a lock out in reverse.I believe the old Sony's on the 2000 era Monaco's were set up this way. 3708

Johno02,
Glad you got it fixed. And I'm kind of puzzled. You say it was working fine and then not? Were you by any chance messing around back there in the dash area and moved the camera input cable to an alternate port on the monitor? You see, that's why mine quit in reverse. I removed the cable(s) from the monitor so I could gain better access to another gauge I was replacing. When I put them (the cable(s) back, it put them in the wrong ports.

Well, a phone call to RV.Cams.com and I think the gents name was Tim Lazzaro (I'll have to confirm that spelling) and he straightened me right out. On our Sony system, the cable from the rear camera has to go to input #1 or, "A". I had it in "B". So, after I put it in "A", the system has worked flawless.

OK, Found the problem, but still don't know why. Monitor has two camera inputs, so I switched camera from one to the other. now it works fine, regardless of the transmission position. Apparently there is a trans pos input, but as there is no owners manual, its a gress. So I will just leave it alone. What happens, we have sliding curtains inside the windshield, and the wire gets knocked out sometimes.

All of the monitors that I've seen have normal power (positive and negative) to power the monitor when you turn on the monitor manually, and also have a separate positive feed to supply power when the backup light circuit has voltage. This separate feed turns on the monitor when the coach is in reverse (if it was not already on) and also selects the primary video input feed if the monitor is capable of multiple inputs.

I suspect some circuit in the monitor is not working correctly. If it were mine, I would pull the monitor, determine which feed wire is providing voltage when the coach is in reverse, and cut that wire. Your monitor will still work with the on/off switch on the monitor. This will work fine if you always turn on the monitor when traveling. You will lose the function to turn on the monitor (if off) when reverse is selected, but that is no longer working correctly anyway.

Johno02,

Well Sir, if yours is anything like ours, it does have a "reverse" trigger wire. While you may think you have nothing coming from the transmission selector, the reverse trigger wire may come off the transmission ECM. I had the EXACT same problem only a few months ago. But, after doing a bit of research and talking with a couple of experts on that camera system, it was determined that I caused my problem and that, I had plugged the cable into the wrong port on the back of the monitor when I disconnected it while in that area doing other repairs/maintenance.

But, unless you've been messing around back there like I was, your issue, while it is the exact same symptoms as mine, has a different cause. This gent I talked with knew the exact wire arrangement in the power feeds, and the cable feeds in our coach. He told me how to test this and that and what effects it would have. I'll have to dig around to get his number for you. I'll get back to you on this.
