Backup Camera Gone Wild

I have a 2000 Winnebago Chieftian. Yesterday we were traveling on the expressway and hit a bump. The backup camera on the dash came on by itself and wouldn't turn off.

After stopping and restarting the rv it went of but the camera come on when ever you hit the brake or use the turn signal. Something must have happened to a switch, but what or where is it and how do I find it.

Any ideas?

We had the same problem on our 2001 Adventurer. Take down the trailer socket and disassemble it. Water has entered through a bad seal at the rear where the wires come in. The water works it's way to the terminals and completes a connection between the terminals.

It took me a couple months to find the problem. When I mentioned it to a Winnebago rep at GNR a few years ago he had heard of the problem with the camera coming on but didn't yet know why it was happening.

It's best to replace the socket. When you reattach the new wires give them a good dose of dielectric grease. The grease is non conductive and will help insulate the terminals should they ever get wet again. Before putting the wires through the back of the socket I would also slide some shrink wrap over them. When the socket is reassembled and in place slide the shrink wrap over the back of the socket and warm it with a hair dryer.

Replacing the socket and making sure the wires didn't get wet again cured our problem. We put on another 60,000+ miles before we traded it off and never had the problem reoccur.

Lucky you have a Winnebago. On their web page you can access the diagrams for the year and model of you coach. Go HERE to find the info you need. It should be part of the 'Automotive Wiring Diagrams.

Looking at the diagrams it's signal from the chassis probably the same relay that lights the backup lights. Check to ensure that the backup lights are not coming on with the brake or turn signal. Could be something as simple as water in the rear lights cross connecting the circuits.

Your camera gets a 12 volt signal to turn it on when the backup lights of the coach are activated. Somewhere, your brake light circuit and your turn signal circuit (combined in some places on some coaches) is backfeeding into your backup light circuit.

I don't have a clue where this is happening.

A chassis wiring diagram would be helpful but complicated as the chassis manufacturer provided the circuits for backup/brake/turn signals but the coach manufacturer actually implemented the installation of those lights and the camera/monitor(or maybe the camera/monitor was owner installed)

You have a troubleshooting project in your future.

It sounds like you have a loose connection, or two, under the dash coming in to the monitor. The turn signal would normally turn on the side cameras and that wiring all terminates in the back of the monitor. I would pull the monitor and check/clean all of the connectors on the back of the monitor and make sure that you have a good ground and power connection to the monitor.
