I need to replace my 6 volt house batteries that will not hold a charge. Do I go with wet cell or maintianance free and what is the best battery?

I got a 12 volt to last me 9yrs one time . Yep reg care. Happy camping

I went with Universalโ„ข AGMs because the only place for them was in front & beside of the radiator. Batteries that off-gas would destroy all my aluminum radiators. The factory picked a bad place for the house batteries but did use large gauge wire and relocating them would be painful.

That is a tough question to answer as batteries and type are kind of a personal preference thing. There are advantages and disadvantages on either choice. I just replaced the battery bank in my RV and decided to go with Lifeline AGM batteries. AGM's are definately more expensive, but I paid extra for the maintenance free aspect of that particular type of battery. I would recommend that you do a lot of internet research and go with the best batteries that you can afford. The battery bank is the heart of your electrical system, and is not an area that you would want to compromise on quality. Good luck with your choice. ๐Ÿ™‚

Depends on your pocket book and how you want to use them. I would go with wet cells cause they are cheaper and, with good maintenance, will last many years. The best battery? That's subjective as the "best" may not be what you need or even want. For example, I would consider the "best" battery to be Lithium Ion but many here would disagree.

I like the 6v golf cart batteries from Costco.
4 whopping cylinders on Toyota RV's. Talk about great getting good MPG. Also I have a very light foot on the pedal. I followed some MPG advice on Livingpress.com and I now get 22 MPG! Not bad for a home on wheels.

Lowest cost is a pair of six volt Wet cells (GC-2) From San's club

Least worry but most expensive is AGM

In between is a maintenance free "Trolling battery" if you can find one. Wal-mart advertises but I've never laid eyes on. This should not be a Marine/Deep cycle, but a true deep cycle.

Note also that with proper maintenance, Life expectancy (Total battery life not time between recharges) is the opposite of price, Lower lasts longer in my experience. (Assumes all are of equal quality for their class)

I put AGM's in on their own loop back in 2006, Replaced them 2012, The original (2005) Wet cells are still going strong.

I found an Interstate Battery Store in Indy and bought 4 6V Blems that were considerably cheaper than non-blems. Have been using them for 2 years with no problems. The warranty is not as long but for the price I could replace them several times for the money I saved.

Backroads, I just replaced my 8 wet cell batteries with 8 AGM's. Although my 7 yr. old wet cell batteries were OK (probably nearing the end of their life), I got tired of the sulfating (white stuff) which caused the battery trays to rust.

I cleaned it often with baking soda/water mixture but got tired of messing with it. So, I decided to go with AGM's. These batteries are probably 3 times more than a wet cell but now I won't have sulfating and I don't have to water them. One less thing for me to worry about.

I had the battery trays cleaned and repainted so everything looks new again.

I have always used the wet cell and check the water monthly. I have used both Trojans and Interstate and have not seen any service life difference.

Hi,

Flooded batteries are always cheaper per amp-hour than AGM, on an initial cost basis. However, they do require regular service.
