Battery Configuration

[Windsor-Monaco]

When reviewing my batteries on our 2001 class 'A' Monaco Windsor I noticed two drawers. The top drawer houses this huge 12 volt battery (picture attached). What does this power?

The second drawer (bottom) houses 4 - 6 volt batteries connected in tandem.

I am not sure which is for the house and which is for starting the vehicle. Why is the 12 volt so large. I've never seen something like this before. Of course, I've never owned an RV before either.

The large single battery (probably an 8D) is the starting battery. The others are the house batteries. That is the same set-up as our '97 Dynasty. The reason the starting battery is so large is that it is probably at least 1300 cold cranking amps. Ours (NAPA brand) is actually 1450 cca.

I would think it is the chassis battery and the 4 6volt are house batteries. Easiest way to find out would be to disconnect the positive and try to start the RV. If it doesn't start then it is the chassis battery.
