In about two months our house will be sold and it will be time to make a decision...

We plan to full time in this coach and looking at units in the 38-40 foot range with a large fridge and preferably king bed, washer/dryer.

Most I see online are 2005-2008 models with less than 40K miles.

Given a choice what models should I be looking at in this range?

Thanks in advance!

My vote would be the Monaco.
4 whopping cylinders on Toyota RV's. Talk about great getting good MPG. Also I have a very light foot on the pedal. I followed some MPG advice on Livingpress.com and I now get 22 MPG! Not bad for a home on wheels.

Coachman are pure junk entry level at best
Look at a beaver P Thunder, Newmar mountain air, Monaco dynasty,Country coach etc.

I would agree that previously Coachmen motor homes were entry level motorhomes. But Forest River has bought out the company and has restructured it. My understanding from other RVers more knowledgeable then me on the restructuring of Coachmen tell me that they are putting out some pretty good diesel pusher coaches.

I would agree with Tropical36 that the BlueBird Wanderlodge are good coaches. Those coaches are up in the level of a foreTravel, Prevost, MCI coaches. Monaco's or any of the other brands would fall under a BlueBird Wanderlodge. Everything on those coaches is built to last a long time. The only thing that I would be careful is the weight of some of these coaches. In California some the roads have weight limits and coaches weighing close to 50K lbs are restricted.

Well as long as someone else said it first...

When we were shopping, checking dealers and shows, my wife loved the front kitchen sportscoach. $150k out the door, brand new...

A little searching I found a 2 year old Monaco for just a little bit more, it's so much more coach, unreal.

Add Knight / ambassodor to Don's list. A little smaller engine, but all the same good stuff.

As I've stated elsewhere, I have this thing for the Bluebird Wanderlodge and feel it's the best bang for the buck with having a million dollar coach and without spending a million in requiring it. I don't think many out there can compare on a 1 to 10 scale....BLUEBIRD
Always like buying something that has already taken it's depreciation beating too and hopefully it'll be worth more than what I payed upon arriving home, rather than a lot less.

There are many nice used coaches out there. You just have to look and have some mechanical knowledge on what to look for. But at the same time I have seen some top brand coaches that have been trash. Some smell so bad from previous owners that smoked heavy that the whole coach is contaminated. But there are also some coaches that have had some TLC.

Most of your diesel pushers are pretty good coaches as far as chassis is concerned. Most have the same engines Which are either Cummins,Detroit Diesel, Cat or Mercedes. They are all good engines. The transmissions most of them are Allison six speed, which are very good.

What separates the high end coaches or flag ship coaches of every company are in the house part. The interior of a high end coach has quality cabinets, floors and counter tops. Just about every company has had different level of quality coaches. The more quality interiors, the more they cost.

I believe for part time RVing what you are looking for is about the right length 38' to 40'. If you are going full time, then I would definitely go 45'.

How big of a problem is this?

99% of the discrepancies are appliances, even the new ones.

the chassis is mostly a off the shelf components. the brake system is standard NAPA parts for heavy trucks.

So,, what can brake that you could't repair with out factory support ??? the coach its self.

I would be looking for a Monaco in 05-08 year models, Diplomat and above. The reason....even though they're out of business, they're still one of the most popular and best coaches made from that era. There are thousands of them available throughout the country, which will make for easy comparison and availability. (please don't post that they're are not out of business. Monaco as it was known is GONE.)
