brake light

I have a 2000 Discovery and the brake lights come at random times. It is parked after atrip back from Tx with no problems. Turning lites require pushing brake pedal. It seem to be ok for days and then they will come on. what is the repair? thanks for any input..

I believe your 2000 Discovery is a diesel pusher built on a Freightliner chassis. If this is true, look at the two brake light switches under the coach on the bottom of the brake treadle valve assembly. These switches are somewhat exposed to road spray, and can develop corrosion. Usually this corrosion will affect the operation of the cruse control but could cause the brake lights to come on with the right humidity, etc.

Maybe check the multifunction switch (aka turn signal switch). On some vehicles the brake light circuit feeds through this switch, as often do the hazard flashers.

It could also be a bad wiring harness somewhere (rodent damage, chafing of the insulation leading to intermittent shorts, etc.) or probably a bad ground somewhere. Bizarre electrical problems not infrequently end up being caused by bad grounds.

For the brake lights, the switch on the brake pedal sounds like it needs to be adjusted. When foot is off the pedal the switch button is probably not completely closing to randomly turn the brake lights on and off.
