California winds

We drove from border to Palm Desert yesterday in the wind. There were warnings but we did it anyway. About 20 miles from the border a squad appeared and took position straddling both lanes and slowed us to around 35 mph for nearly 50 miles. Actually helped. We noticed on news last night some gusts in that area over 50mph. Much worse as you get closer to the border but we were not driving. My added sway bar and steering stabilizer helped a lot on my gas Winnebago Suncruiser 38Q. We may delay run to LA until wind gets better. Scheduled to make the drive on Saturday but concerned about San Bernadino mountains.

We have been camping out on Lake Havasu until yesterday and the winds have been around 25 MPH gusting to 35-40 MPH we moved yesterday and were on the Colorado River just below Parker Dam and the winds here are calmer but it still blows good in the late afternoon. Last night driving home from Parker, AZ. My I-Phone weather alert went off (very similar to a amber alert) warning us of high winds and fire danger? The wind here is blowing out of the Northeast toward the West. Across the River from our Camping spot is San Bernardino County, California desert. Weโ€™re about 240 miles East of Los Angeles is my guess.

your a long long ways from the ventura and La area fires so no worrys
Thanks, my wife read in USA Today that the alert was sent out to 12 million people! I donโ€™t have to sleep with one eye opened tonight!

I tried to get thru a rain storm with 40 mph winds ONCE.

I thought I was going to die and ended up pulling off. These MH's are most certainly not built to drive in high winds.

Drove on the I-10 today around noon from Cathedral City, CA to Indio, CA, and back (50 mile round trip). No significant wind today although they say the wind in the pass blowing West was pretty strong through Whitewater, Banning, etc, just not in the Coachella Valley.

JRooster, you certainly could be at risk for a fire storm. The fire doesn't need to come from an existing fire, someone or something could start a fire and the wind will cause it to grow exponentially. Be safe out there!

I think somebody checked my profile. Yes they were blowing West no matter what direction they came from.

I understood 'blowing WEST' meaning just that.

High winds, especially cross winds, do make driving a lot more challenging/difficult. Continuous winds are bad enough but gusting winds are the worst.
In high winds, like we usually experience in the Great Plains, I pump my four corner air bags up to maximum air pressure and this makes it a little easier to maintain a straight course. We always found that getting on the road before the sun comes up gives us a little time to travel before the winds really start to pick up.
During the last hurricane I found out that our coach did not blow over in an 80 MPH wind with gusts approaching 100 MPH. At that time it was sitting on it's wheels, levelers up, and loaded close to how we usually travel. An empty coach, or semi trailer, are more likely to be blown over than one that is loaded.
Whenever you don't feel comfortable on the highway with the winds, stop for the day and just relax in an RV park or parking lot.

I do. Near Salton Sea. Forecast is for more nastiness at 1pm then settling down again.

I took one of our cars for service to the Indigo Auto Group in Rancho Mirage yesterday and the winds were not bad on the highway as it 'hugs' the mountains. Interstate 10 could have been totally different.

We had heavy wind driving west from TN for two solid days a week ago. First day it was blowing north and the second day blowing south. It could have been worse if it was a total head-wind.

Warning everyone.... We are in Laughlin, and has been down right nasty since Sunday, and these winds are expected to stay this way for at least another 48 hrs, possibly till Sunday morning.

We have seen a few brave? souls on the road, but not many. Think we have had 2-3 people pull in the last couple of days. There is some damage here, and most people have their satellite dishes down. Yes, itโ€™s that bad.

If you donโ€™t have to come through this area, please donโ€™t. Itโ€™s dangerous.
