Dirt ceiling

We just bought this rig and the ceiling has the carpet type covering...around the air vents it is discolored. You can tell they tried to clean it (there is some kind of power that falls out as you rub the ceiling). Is there a preferred way to clean these types of ceilings? Do you just hire a carpet cleaner to come in and steam clean it?

I replaced the ceiling carpet myself in the bedroom and bath area. Not a real hard job if your handy. Inexpensive to do. Looks great, just like a new coach. Used a outdoor carpet adhesive, water cleanup and great tack properties. Good luck

You replaced it with another carpet type ceiling? Was the biggest pain cutting out all the vents/lights?

The replacement ceiling carpet was same as original covering. All the vents, lights were easily removed. I considered using another type ceiling cover, non other would have been as easy to install. This is (was when new) a country coach intrigue, a pretty high end coach.

Currently planning for retirement.....planning to build a small home in Nova Scotia for summers and someday year-round. Trying to sort out a good way to spend winters in central Florida as I can't drive anymore.

I have a white carpet celling and I use LYSOL ALL PURPOSE CLEANER WITH HYDROGEN PEROXIDE in it. I spray it on and let it sit like 5min then I use a small hand held shampooer or shop vac. I been doing that for about 6yrs now works great.

I have used Steam to clean some things that were dirty to a point you'd not believe.. It does not often discolor fabric, I'd be careful using it on a ceiling though cause if you melt adheasives bad things happen. but it shoud work properly applied.

Be very careful you do not steam your fingers, it will cut the flesh off the bone.

One time at a towing company where I worked for a while I took my steamer (A Euro Shark "Canister" type) in and cleaned the toiled.

When I entered and plugged in it was black

about a pint of water later it was white.

Water, that's all I used, water, 220 degree water.
Home was where I park it. but alas the.

Best cleaner we have found is fantastik scrubbing bubbles oxy power.

Yep, that's what it looks like...how do you usually apply the "scrubbing bubbles"? Do you use a shop vac or anything (like others suggested) or do you just spray it on and leave it?

With excellent supervision (DW) I just followed the directions on the spray bottle of cleaner. Don't recall exactly what they were, as I was told "just do it like it says".

Weird....

No, not really. Our previous MH...2000 Fleetwood Storm had a carpeted cieling as did several other MH's that we knew of at the time.

I wonder if the stains that the OP is referring to are water marks(?) If so, could that be from perhaps accidentally leaving the vents open during a hard rain?

I would not try it,water and steam would not be a good thing to do to the adhesive or the underlying material.
If the ceiling is covered with that kind of carpet type fabric.

I have had great luck with Folex,on my ceilings just spray it on and BLOT don't rub,you will be amazed at how it lifts out the stains.

It may take more than one application but it took out all of my stains.

You can get it at most big box home improvement stores or Amazon check out the reviews and pictures.

I worry about steam removing the glue that holds it on. Depending on how bad it is, you might want to replace it but that could be a can of worms. I wonder if there is something you could cover it with like maybe these:

If there was a way to attach them.

Get a rug cleaner (extractor type) with a hose and wand, or a powerful shopvac. Mix Oxyclean with hot water, put in a spray bottle, and spray onto the soiled areas. Let it sit for a couple of minutes and extract the solution with the rug cleaner/shopvac. Spray some plain hot water on the areas to rinse and extract again. I can almost guarantee this will work as I've done it in the past with great success.
