Extended Warranty, where do I go and would you do it.

2006 Ford V10 chassis underneath a 2007 Fleetwood Terra 34N. The original engine threw a rod in Aug '10. The engine had right at 12k miles. Rebuilt engine was installed by a diesel repair shop and Ford provided a 3 yr, 100k mile warranty on the new engine. The engine has had about 11k miles put on it in the last 3 yrs. All of that happened to the previous owner. Now it's mine and I was/am considering an extended warranty when the current warranty ends. I talked to a Ford dealer today who said they couldn't provide an extended warranty on a motorhome, especially one that old. I'm not sure I believe everything he said, but I haven't had time to contact Ford directly. I didn't want extended coverage on the motorhome, really only the engine or drivetrain at most. If Ford is not willing to provide an extended warranty, where should I be looking? Considering the mileage, would you be concerned about getting a warranty?

I've had my GS CSP for almost 9 years. The way I look at it, it's just another form of insurance. You'll be glad you have IF the big hit comes, and they do with RV's. Their like "BOATS? Bust out another thousand! lol

To buy or not to buy....... Very personal decision. Here's the question I would ask the guy in the mirror:

If I have a catastrophic failure on my RV, will I be able to absorb the cost to repair it? Or will I be paying on an RV LOAN for a rig that is sitting in my driveway, un-usable?

By catastrophic, I mean a drivetrain failure, like an engine or transmission. In a gasser, this could run $5,000 - $7,000. If this would kill you financially, look at an EW for drivetrain coverage. A refrigerator failure may run you $1500. This is where it becomes more questionable. Sure, things can pile up and end up costing you big money, but the odds are against it.

YOU need to decide based on your risk tolerance and financial status. We bought our 2003 Executive in 2011. While it had all the maintenance records and was "apparently" is wonderful shape, it had 63,000 miles on it and you never REALLY know how well it was cared for. We bought a 2 year EW, because we had no prior experience with such a higher end DP and did not want any ugly surprises. Our EW will run out in September and unless we have a slew of problems, we will not recoup what we've paid in. Our only problem was a failed alternator, this past March.

We have XtraRide Platinum coverage. They are a real pleasure to deal with! If you do decide to buy in, I would strongly suggest looking at them. Wholesale Warranties, online, does rep them.

Just go into the decision with your eyes open, realizing that this is insurance and the providers make lots of money. Odds are you will not recover what you paid in, by a longshot. None of that matters, however, if you are comfortable with the decision. Don't let others try to dictate what YOU should do. Make your own informed decision........

Very well stated !!!!

Just to clarify something. I usually don't go with extended warranties, but the cost of this engine replacement was in excess of $14k and 10 days in an unscheduled stopover.

We also self insure. Put 10% of the purchase price into the maintenance/repair account and add to it each month. Most people will not get the value of the extended warranty, but if you need it for piece of mind, then make sure you read, read, and read the fine print so you know exactly what you are getting and what you are not getting. Remember, they only make money if they don't pay out versus what they collect in premiums.

I would always purchase an extended warranty. JMHO
I purchased my current warranty from www.Wholesalewarranties.net
They offer a variety of plans, and when I had a claim they acted as an agent and helped me process the claim and followed the claim through to satisfaction.
Again, JMHO
Happy Trails.

Good Sam offers an extended warranty, or at least they did.
There is a cut off on age but I think your 2006 is in the range.

I bought it. Thought the price was right and was VERY amazed that they offer it for Rv's!
