Hey group I have a 2004 Holiday Rambler Endeavor with a Cummins ISC 330.. Changing the fuel filters was wondering about prefilling them?? And priming them, on my diesel pickup you just cycle the key a few times and start it. What about on this motor, what the procedure?

Go to Napa and get a Mr. filter F1nc filter funnel and fill your filters.

My "Fleetguard" fuel filter had the graphic printed on it showing to pre-fill it. I changed them myself, it started right up and have had no problems.

Perhaps reading the links below will help you to be familiar with more than 12 Aircraft. It has nothing to do with an RV and everything to do with Filters.

Prefill......you won't have issues. Block the center hole with your thumb and fill via the outer holes.

Just FYI..... I have read that one of the reasons that Cummins recommends dry install is that then there is no opportunity for possible contamination from the fuel the filter is filled with.

The OP's 04 ISC has the same fuel system as my 04 ISL and Cummin says to put the filters on dry and cycle the lift pump several times... I've never had a problem in 12 years cycling it three times and starting. Is prefilling with clean fuel going to hurt anything, NO, but why when it's not needed nor recommended for many Cummin engines plus you would still need to cycle the lift pump.

IF he had a Cat engine without a hand priming pump then I'd recommend that he only change it with a prefilled filter. I'd also suggest he park it nose up on the steepest slope he could find with a full fuel tank in the hopes he can get the old filter off and new on quick enough that only a small amount of air gets in. Otherwise he's going to test the durability of his batteries and starter... even having to crack the lines at the injectors to get the air out.

Not sure how airplane fuel filters relate to a DP and of the dozen airplanes I'm very familiar with, non have fuel filters but all have fuel strainers with a water drain that you clean and reuse.

If you're paranoid, strain the fuel through a coffee filter.

Prefill it. Even the filter shows you should prefill.

I owned a trucking business. In 50 years of running diesels I have always filled them and so has everyone I knew in trucking. I am also an A&P Mechanic and we prefill airplane fuel filters. I hear all the baloney about not doing it but no one can prove 1 failure contributed to prefill.

After turning the key on you should be able to hear the lift pump run for proximately 30 seconds before it shuts off.... go back and listen. Cycling the key three times... 1.5 minutes will fill the filters and get all the air out. Never had it not crank right up and continue to run. Not having to prefilled comes in handy when you do it on the side of the road.

Yup, that is what the ISL manual says-- and it worked on mine.

My recommendation: go with what is recommended by your engine manufacturer. Too many "correct" ways depending on what make, model and year the engine is. Also, what filter and primer pump/no primer pump the chassis maker speced.

I have done it both ways. Pre-fill and you will have no problems. The last time I did not have fuel available to pre-fill so I did the key cycle. I cycled it three times and it started right up then died. Cycled it a couple more times and it started after cranking for about 45 seconds. It ran fine after that. Like I said, pre-fill if you can. Years ago when I drove a semi we pre-filled with transmission fluid. That's what the boss told us to do and it seemed to work fine.

I pre-filled for several years then read where I should not be doing this. Next time I changed filters I did the key cycle like they said. Took me two days to to finally get my coach running. Pre-fill through the small holes and avoid the problems. I know several people will tell you they have never had a problem but odds are it is just a matter of time.
