Gen-Turi Question

For those that have and use the Gen-Turi generator vent tube.....

We have been considering some off-grid camping...concerts, races, etc.....and want to be able to run the generator to use A/C, especially at night. When I run the genset now, the exhaust smell inside when sitting still gets a bit overwhelming. The CO detector has never gone off, and I've used the CO meter from my office to check on the level inside, no reading so far, but I won't go to sleep with the genset running in its present configuration with the exhaust pipe where it is. It is right beside the engine exhaust pipe in front of the rear driver's side tires, and is under and between the kitchen and bedroom windows....basically beneath the bathroom.

So, does the Gen-Turi product really take the fumes and CO away from the RV good enough to feel safe running the genset all night?

Onan advises not to use them, but I have used mine plenty with no problems. I did rig a support chain to take the weight of the Genturi off of the Onan's exhaust pipe, as I think all that weight on the pipe could cause problems.

Onan advises against using any exhaust extensions due to the potential for increased back pressure. But I find it interesting that the Gen-Turi elbow, the only part that is actually attached to the exhaust system, is shorted than and equal to or a larger diameter than the extensions that Onan themselves sell. My take is that the disclaimer is lawyer speak to protect them from improperly engineered homemade extensions.

Generator manufacturers will say Do not do it. Guess they would rather you not wake up in the AM

I have seen two reasons for them doing that

1: They are worried about "Torque" from the weight of the Gen-Turi on the generator exhaust pipe cracking the manifold.. On my ONAN there is a very "Flexible" joint there and the pipe is supported at the edge of the RV so the generator bears NONE of the weight of the Gen-Turi. zero torque. And thus that excuse is vapor.

2: "That sweep Elbow will generate additional back pressure which may affect the operation of the Generator.

NOT so I've ever noticed, For one the Gen-turi pipe is usually LARGER (meaning less back pressure) and in some installs it's a lot straighter as well..

But, as with everything.. EVERY manufacturer will take any excuse to void your warranty..

Oh, you put a non standard wheel on the steering axle.. That's why your differential went bad....

You changed to LED tail lights, that's what fried your fuel pump

Ok so I'm joking ..... Slightly.. But they are darn near that bad.

When in "generator only" areas of rallies it should be a requirement for signup and when setting up. It also should be required on RVs with diesel fired hydronic heating with the mid-coach exhaust. We no longer attend rallies and opt for "generator only" areas due to getting gassed on two different occasions by a neighboring RV's hydronic system running for heat and pumping the exhaust "under" our RV with prevailing winds. Alarms went off and wife and dogs got sick. We had a Gen-Turi, they had none.

I have heard nay-sayers make all sorts of negative claims,, NOT ONE OF WHICH IS TRUE.

This is what happened with me.

Before Gen-Turi.. 2 hours of Generator run time parked and BEEP BEEP BEEP the Co detector got down right annoying (Read that worked as designed)

After Genturi. 25 hours and not a peep out of the detector.. Slept in the RV at least twice with Generator running all night long providing event power.. Woke up refreshed both morning and no headache.

If I'm running the generator parked,, YOu bet I have the Genturi-attached.

Oh by the way, the things the nay-sayers neigh... Stuff like 'The Air conditioner will suck in the fumes from up on the roof'.

There is no fresh air intake on the A/C. Inside is sealed from outside, any air it "Sucks in" outside, is exhausted outside, the inside air comes from inside, to that Neigh is... Impossible.. the rest of 'em are no better.

Works great for me...a lot of people build their own cheaper. I was pressed for time and bought mine. No regrets at all!

10forty2...I have the exact model and color as yours in a 2000 model.

I also use the Genturi overnight on occasion. I have always used a second portable battery powered monitor on the counter top in the bedroom as an extra precaution. Also replaced the hard wired unit last year as well. Never had any issues with all vents and windows closed.

I use a couple of the round suction cups from Harbor Freight to support the Genturi straps. The cups have a handle that pulls good suction. They work best with a few drops of water on the rubber surface as you apply the suction. I didn't want to drill holes in the fiberglass.

We ran our generator with the Gen-Turi attached non-stop for the better part of a week during a storm related power outage with zero fumes in or around the coach, and even less noise inside and out. We're very pleased with how well the Gen-Turi performs.
