GPS mount

I got tired of the suction cup mount not staying in place, and not having a decently convenient location for accessibility.

I tried a base for the suction cup in this location, the base was really sticky but it seems GM plastics are immune to adhesives...  even though I had cleaned the area with acetone.

I purchased this RAM mount on a whim, and found a 1" to Garmin ball size (apparently called a "B size") in a geocache - gee, this looks useful!

Yes, I put holes in the top of the dash, but also applied a good & thin double stick foam tape to the bottom of the mount:

Now it'll stay there, and it is in a very convenient location.  Better yet, it obscures very little view out of the windscreen:

We tested this on a trip a couple of weeks ago - it works as designed.
Another project complete!

This is the mount that I use. It is great on the dashboard. It has a soft rubber base that molds to the dash and does not move around like so many of them.

Garmin Portable Friction Mount

I use the same one,I can put it anywhere and it stays, folds flat for easy storage. Amazon has it for about 1/2 the price as the one listed above.

Actually I think I got mine through Amazon also. With Prime I always look there first for free 2 day shipping.

I use it with Garmin 2757 which is a 7" screen model and the mount still stays put with on the dash.

Dakzuki, can you please tell me the item number of the RAM product you have? I just contacted the RAM company and they said they do not have anything that attaches to the rear view mirror, only a cradle. Is that what you have? I want a mount that actually takes the place of the mirror.

Iamichabod, that still requires a cradle doesn't it? My GPS is a Garmin Nuvi 65LM with an 18 mm ball. What I am looking for is a mount that attaches in place of the rear view mirror, with an arm and a ball that does not require a cradle. (my apologies to the OP for hijacking his thread).

Yes,that was the problem, besides the mount the sell the cradle, more $
like this there are others too.

Sorry too Bruce but I do like your dash upgrades,my '05 dash is a bit different but it has given me some ideas.

You are right about the dash,I don't know what it is made of but it is really hard to get something to stick to it.
It seems with a little modification, the $14 Garmin cradle you pointed out here will mount to the windshield mount I am using for my backup camera monitor. Just drill 2 more holes in the square silver plate and/or the black one in the kit.

Then again.....maybe no drilling at all. The black rectangular plate with square hole located in the lower-left corner of the picture, might be the one that fits your Garmin cradle.

Ebay sells all kinds of clamp-on-to-the-mirror types for under $10. Just search "mirror mount GPS".

If your inside mirror is totally useless like ours was, but you don't have a backup camera monitor like we do here, maybe you could mount your GPS in this area. It might work great as long as you can quick-release it and willing to run an extra hidden power cable to it.

The hardware below is what I used for my backup camera monitor. It is found HERE, Part Number: 250-8088, but it does not have a quick-release feature.

While the mirror mount is a great idea, it's a bit tough for the Bifocal/trifocal drivers. I like the location I chose for these reasons:

1) It is at normal view height - no looking up or down, just a tad bit to the left
2) It is easily reachable - no stretching or bending
3) Minimal obstruction of the windshield...

Some points to consider.

I'm planning on moving the backup camera monitor up and back so it no longer obscures the windshield as well, and is easier to reach. Not that it needs fiddled with as a GPS does, however.

We have a rear window that I'd like to install a Fresnel lens, and put a good old-fashioned mirror back on the windshield so I can glance back into the coach (what was that crash?) or through the Fresnel to watch traffic.

There's many options, but none that are perfect for everyone.
