Low Tire Pressure

Could someone tell me if there are safety problems or dangers going a short distance with a low tire pressure on one of the rears?

Small portable compressors do not have enough power to fill one of them big tires. I used to have one that I bought at WalMart. It said it would fill up to 200 lbs. I was lucky to fill a car tire much less a coach tire.

I have used it on 16" tires on our former coach and while slow, it allowed me to get into the shop for a repair, much faster than waiting the 2 hours for a service truck to arrive out where we live.

I think it took about 30 minutes including some cool down time.

I wouldn't even consider trying in the 22.5 tires on my DP. That's why I now carry an air hose and chuck!

I agree with J Rooster on his post. He describes exactly what happens with a low tire.

X2 though it would take a while. You might have to pause to let the compressor cool down. The one I have has a maximum continuous run time of 10 minutes. Canadian Tire carry them. I think the closet to you would be Lantzville.

When I worked in a tire shop decades ago (60s) I was told that 10% under inflated would damage the tire.

depends on how low, what weight, how far, how hot?

Well said... If you have duals and you are talking about say a quarter mile with one of them low (Far enough to get off the road).. I'd say no.

If you are talking maxed out tires,,, YES.

Example.. I once moved a trailer about 10 feet.. That's all it took. Had to put the spare on and get the original replaced.

Years later,..,., Same trailer... Stripped down to just the shell and used as a utility trailer popped a valve stem.

I drive a few miles before I was able to drop it and go for the spare.

Replaced valve stem and tire survived.

Of course the trailer was empty at the time.

And within a month I scrapped the trailer.
Home was where I park it. but alas the.

What you can do is, if you have a bicycle-pump with an adaptor to car-tires, pump the tires with that pump.
Will take 100 times pumping , but can do in this special situation.
bycicles also use high pressure, especially race-bycicles.
Some pumps even have a manometer on it, so you can see the pressure.

You can also use it on the road , because then its only to add a few psi , wich takes only 20 times pumping. And it always works , no need for electricity and good for your condition.

OP, you better not drive the 500' to the compressor. You need to bring it to your tire or you'll ruin them! :S
Sorry Johnny T, but there are a bunch of old maids on here. Going 6 miles at 30 mph is not going to hurt anything. Granted since he can air it up... he should, but what if your are on the road. Are you going to sit there and wait for ERS to come out or drive slowly to the next town? I've driven further than that after a blow out and the good tire was still going strong 10K miles later. A 8R19.5 at 90 psi is good for 3000lbs and for each 5 psi you loose 125 of load carrying. At 65 psi your are at 2410 and at 40 you'd be at 1800 lbs... a 40% overload. Not enough to hurt a tire in 6 miles at a slow speed. I've got my fire suit on so flame away.
This post is my opinion (free advice). It is not intended to influence anyone's judgment nor do I advocate anyone do what I propose.

Thank you all very much. The campground has a compressor I can use to raise the pressure.

Since it is 1/2 what it should be, for safty's sake it should be aired up with an extension. Call your ERS. I had a friend killed by an exploding tire.

Based on your follow on posts that the tire pressure is 40 versus 90... I would not drive the coach till the tire pressure was raised to normal pressures..

All of us have taken wire and flexed it back and forth till it broke... That scenario is what is happening when a tire is driven at low pressure.. The lower the pressure in relation to the prescribed pressure for the weight the tire is supporting the greater the impact on the tire... So basically driving the tire when it is significantly deflated will weaken the side wall... I just would not do it...

Driving with it that low puts to much weight on the good tire. You could end up having to replace both tires.rides

That would be to low for me. The comment about contacting your ERS was good, they would be able to air you up enough for the drive.

Yep. And be sure to figure out why the tire is low.
