M&G Tow Brake Installation

Has anyone had this installed on their coach and tow vehicle? Can someone please provide a cost for install?

I know that every install is different, but I'm trying to get a rough understanding of cost. Especially for the tow vehicle install since this will most likely be the most time consuming.

For me, I'm looking at installation on a 2005 Toyota Tacoma and a Spartan chassis. So, this is a Diesel air brake installation.

I did the install of the M & G on our coach, an '04 Itasca Horizon 3GD with the C-7 330HP CAT, and on our one toad, an '11 GMC Sierra 1500 4x4 Extended Cab and, our second toad, an '03 Jeep Rubicon. The coach side was seriously simple. One cut in the middle of the ABS to parking brake air line and, install a "T". Then, from the T to the rear of the coach, a 1/4" supplied air line, to the fitting on the rear, DONE!

On the Truck, that was also not very hard at all. That total install took me about four hours, start to finish. And, most of that was running the airline and securing it in the front to an fabricated bracket that, was close to the electrical hookup but, not look obtrusive.

One the Jeep, that took about the same amount of time and did require cutting the power brake booster studs so they would fit in the allotted space inside the M & G slots and yet still be able to get the nuts on.

I especially like the fact that:

1. There's absolutely NOTHING inside the toad, no robot pushing on the brake pedal. That means nothing to connect and disconnect for towing.
2. No unit that you have to disconnect and carry to some storage place each and every time you disconnect.
3. NO adjustments, it's proportional and only applies the toad brakes at a pressure equal to the amount you're applying the coach brakes.
4. The Exhaust brake has no effect on it. That means no excessive wear and tear on the toad brakes.
5. No activation of the brake lights due to the fact that the brake pedal does not move when the brakes are applied. That's a great PLUS when the original light bulbs in the toad, are used as toad lights when hooked to the coach.
6. And, since there's no attachment of any type to the toads electrical system, there's no discharge of the toads battery, as there is with some braking systems that utilize the toads battery as a power source.

The M & G System really is a fairly simple system to install. When complete and, are ready to tow, there's only one small, curely cue air line between the coach and toad.

I had my master cylinder replaced for an unrelated reason and the mechanic refused to install the new one on the cylinder, he had no idea what it was and said he wouldn't install because of liability. I installed mine originally and had to grind a wrench to do it. Didn't have the wrench or a grinder and found this Authorized installer 2 miles from the campground. Took under a hour and he charged me $100 he took it for a test ride and did a nice job.

If you do not have room to move the master cylinder or want to make your own... a 1.25" diameter air cylinder works well.

$600 is consistent with the estimate I got.... that included cost for the breakaway system. 6 hrs labor @ $100.

I'm going to do it myself.

We have the M&G and are very pleased. We ended up going to M&G themselves in Texas while we were going by. If I remember correctly, the install was only a bit more than the unit itself, about $250.

The 600 may or may not be out of line depending if the Toyota will need to have things moved around to fit. Call M&G they will know.

On my jeep it took about an hour to install the air cylinder to the vehicle I had new brake lines manufactured at a brake shop because they where to short that added about 30 to 45 minutes. I also needed to move a bracket that held a air pollution sensor and that added maybe 30 minutes more so I am at about 2 to 2 and a half hours.

I had a mechanic that worked on air brakes do the MH that took about 30 minutes.

The installation is not hard at all on most vehicles, but I was going to install it on a 2002 Ford Ranger and it was too much work because the whole fuse box was on the way of extended master cylinder. I would have had to find a new spot for the fuses which would require lots of work. Make sure you have room on the vehicle you are going to install it because it will push the master cylinder out some inches.

But the system I would have to say is the best for a tow vehicle because it is air operated and when you apply the brakes on the coach it also applies it to the tow vehicle.

Labor should not take more then three hours at the most, more like two hours labor. I believe the M&G at the time I was interested on it was like $600. for the kit.
Most other systems will run around $1200.

$600 might not be out of line especially when the labor rates are anywhere from $100 to $125 per hour. The coach should take an hour to 1 1/2 hour. The rest is the vehicle

Well, I don't have the place to do an install which is keeping me from doing it. Don't have a problem paying someone, but was quoted over $600 to have it installed.....No Thanks!

I too could do it myself, but campgrounds really don't allow it. I was quoted over $600 to do the install and backed away for it. I'd love to find someone for $75, heck I'd pay $100 and a few beers.

Did you get a regular mechanic to do it or did you go to an RV place?

I did the coach air install but farmed out the installation in the master cylinder. I probably could have done it myself but i didn't have the correct wrench for the brake line nuts...cost me about $75.00 or so and that was OK.

FYI, the system works really well and I'm totally satisfied.

If you are at all proficient with tools it's an easy DIY. I installed my M&G system on the coach and two different pickups with no problem.Being in my 70's didn't deter me one bit so I say go for it, you will save some money. But I have no clue how much a tech would charge for the install. I had about 2 hours in it doing it myself.
