Hi everyone! We are new here, my wife and I are starting a 6-month road trip on April 1st in our 1995 PleasureWay. We will be spending the next 4 weeks preparing, including spending a lot of time on this site. We are grateful to have access to an active community with interests similar to ours that we can lean on for advice along the way.

Just saying hi for now, but we are definitely looking forward to meeting some new friends along our path!

Hi stan, we actually ran out of time (and the quick quote I received was $200/tire...) so decided to hold off for a few weeks. We're not planning to wait until Seattle, but once we can find the right deal on the Hercules tires.

We paid the price already though -- ended up having a slow leak after about 1200 miles, woke up in a state park with a flat. Paid about $215 for a Michelin that we'll use as a spare when we change the other 4. Our spare was in great shape, but older than I trust too.

Hi everyone!! Just wanted to give a quick update...

We have been on the road for about 1 week now, we're really enjoying the windshield time and settling into this super relaxing lifestyle. We plan to stop at our first RV park over the weekend and hope to learn more about using the features (including becoming experts with the tanks) of our PW at that time. If anyone else will be near Carlsbad we would be happy to meet up for an in-person intro!

Overall, she's been doing great! We started in Lost Maples, then hit Big Bend, and now we're at Fort Davis. There were some serious altitude changes we drove through, and while she chugged along I could feel her saying 'I think I can I think I can', so we named her after the Little Engine That Could -- Tillie!

According to the OP's last post, he has gotten the tire message.

Tires are like brakes, your life depends on them. Tires get you rolling, and brakes get you stopped, the 2 most important auto functions. Don't skimp on either of those items, save somewhere else.

My thought with the tires is that I'll sign up for Good Sam or AAA (I'll be browsing these forums for a comparison next...), so having a flat for the first ~2 months of the trip (while in the US, hopping from place to place, driving during the daytime through relatively good weather, etc) would be an inconvenience but not too bothersome.

My brother bought a used Coachman Class B from a seller in Tampa Florida, and I went with him to pick it up. The tires looked good (the seller had cleaned and shined them), so we figured we'd be fine driving the 60 miles back home on them.

But luck wasn't with us.

As we crossed a bridge going into Venice Florida, the right rear tire exploded. When it did, it took out the right rear fender flare and the water line to the bathroom.

After the tire blew, my brother wrestled the van over to the side of the road just beyond the bridge, and we spent an hour trying to get the van jacked up to get the old tire off, while fighting fire ants, and trying not to slide down the embankment we were parked on.

When we finally got home and checked the dates on the tires, we saw they were six years old and over inflated by twenty pounds.

My brother bought a new set of tires the next days, and then had to spend almost $600 to buy, paint and mount a new fender flare and fix the plumbing lines.

We learned an important lesson that day.

Always, always check the tires before driving. If they look or are old, replace them sooner rather than later.

A blowout can do a lot of expensive damage to an RV.

We were lucky. We had driven across the Sun Shine Skyway bridge in Tampa earlier and had the tire blown there, it could have been disastrous.

Don't tempt fate. Replace the tires before you go on a trip - especially with your loved ones aboard.

However, now that I'm thinking about the instance of a blowout and the damage it could do to my PW, new tires sound a lot more attractive. I'm glad I mentioned it, and thank you all for catching it!!
The Hercules looks like a fantastic tire and very reasonably priced, outstanding recommendation!

AGuyAndHisDog -- keep an eye on our blog, we'll be posting updates as we move across the country. If you save your Montana trip for August that's when we're expecting to be up there. Austin isn't exactly known for its camping, but you nailed it -- there are so many good spots just a few hours away from us! No name for our PW yet, but soon!

stan909 makes a good point on tires: get five of them. You don't want a crummy spare 200 miles from Denver or Fairbanks. His point about stiff sidewalls is also on target. You gotta remember: these rigs are heavy and have only four feet, not six like a Class C.

I've been perusing the forums for a while but hadn't registered until I read your post and the exceptional replies from this community.

I've recently purchased a PleasureWay and have enjoyed many "Austin local" excursions to Inks Lake, South Llano, Fredricksberg, Pedernals Falls, Ft. Davis (I love that place) as well as a few "road trips to nowhere". Enough of those "extended weekend" trips helped me to figure out what I needed (and didn't need) to take with me.

I've taken the Pleasureway (Have you named her/it?) along the route depicted in your blog many times and you will be passing through some wonderful towns getting out of Texas and beyond.

I'm heading out of the Austin area around the same time you are but this time I think I'm heading North-East and perhaps finding myself taking secondary roads to Delaware (or Montana... I haven't decided yet).

I hope you and the Mrs. have a great trip, and I agree with the advice of getting new tires sooner rather than later.

Happy trails -

I second the buy tires now idea. When a tire comes apart it can tear up a vehicle pretty bad. I recommend Hurcules Terra track 2's. Inexpensive but strong. They also have a roadhazard warranty which is rare in an AT tire. The sidwalls are very stiff and really stabilize the handling of the van. I love mine.BTW.Buy 5 tires. Your spare is probably shot. These Hurcules were $580 out the door for 4 at my tire shop.
