I have a switch which allows the engine to start off the house batteries.

Are you sure the switch on map light itself is on and the bulb is good?

Passenger side ejection seat?
My advice is worth exactly what you paid for it.

I had one on a '96 Dolphin that was open on the load end. I am sure it was for an accessory or an add on.

I have a ‘76 FMC and they were all built from ‘73-76. Therefore, it is normal for a new owner to find “mystery switches” as we call them. It can take years to figure out what they do so good luck and happy hunting!

We have a switch in the dash the controls a reading light, but the switch on the light itself must be on first for the light on the dash to work.

I added a switch to our 2005 GBM Cruise Master which switches the dash radio power from the chassis battery to the coach batteries. A little while later, I added a second one that turns on the sub-woofer. THAT one is noticeable when it's turned on! LOL

We have a light on/near the armrests that control overhead reading lights for the driver & passenger, and as others have said, this requires that the switch on the actual light fixture itself to be ON. Otherwise, it looks like the switch doesn't have a function.

Use the KISS approach, do nothing, next sometime something doesn't work throw the s/w and see what happens.

Does it look like the other switches? If not as mentioned above could be anything. In a 2000 Hurricane I once owned the wipers would not turn off. This was after having the motor repaired. To solve the problem I simply installed a switch on the dash the killed the power to the motor.

If it is not a factory installed switch it could be virtually anything. A pair of fog lamps that are no longer there? A rear work light? etc. About the only solution is to get under the dash and try to trace where the wires go.

Our 2001 Georgie Boy Landau has a switch on the right of the glove box that operates the right side overhead map light. The left side map light is operated by turning the dashboard light brightness control all the way up until it clicks. The lamps themselves may also have built-in switches, so make sure they're on as well.
