Onan generator wont start

I am having problems starting my Onan generator it is a Emerald 4000 model 4BGEFA26101K
The problem is the following: When I press the Start button the engine does not crank instead I hear a winding sound and it never starts.
I will appreciate very much any help.

Are you saying it sounds like the starter is spinning? In that case the starter gears are not engaging. Can you place a wood or metal rod on the starter housing and while someone pushes the button tap on the top of the pole with a hammer .... could be the gears are stuck on the inner shaft. Tapping could dis-lodge the gear.

Today I changed the starter solenoid and no help, still the same problem

It sounds like the problem could be either the starter solenoid or the starter itself, I hope is the starter solenoid, since if it is the starter I would have to take the generator down in order to replace it.
I was thinking of making a hole in the metal cover to be able to access the starter and not taking the generator down.
Have anybody done that????

Sounds like you need a starter. Pop the cover to the generator and on the far left side you should be able to see the fan. Hit the starter switch and look for fan movement.

Start the truck engine and the alternator output will boost the battery voltage somewhat and maybe allow engagement of the starter solenoid for the gen set

jluke how can I test it and make sure it is the starter selonoid

sounds as though your starter solenoid is not engaging, so the starter motor is just spinning and not turning the motor over.

I also cleaned all contacts

and just changed the oil

The gas tank is half full
