Onan Genset Radiator

My rig has an Cummings Onan GenSet 10000W hdkca. My rig is a 2000 Tiffin Zephyr. I believe this is the original GenSet. It was leaking coolant. As required by my service plan I had the issue checked out by a certified repair facility -- Frieghtliner. The diagnosis is that the radiator needs to be replaced. My service plan will cover the replacement. However, its been a week and the tech is telling me that they are having trouble locating a radiator. Can anyone tell me where to find one? Thanks, Phil

Phil,
Just an FYI. I had the same 10kw quiet diesel in my Monaco and unknown to me the previous owner had it serviced and the servicing dealer overtightened the drain plug.

Since this part of the radiator is a material made of a hard plastic, the over tightening cracked the housing that the plug went into. They tried to repair it with some type of epoxy but it only lasted about a year.

When I bought the coach and changed out all the fluids, I found the crack as I had some seepage after refilling the radiator. I ended up buying a new radiator from Cummins Power South in Jax and they installed it. I don't have the invoice in front of me but I remember around 1800 for the radiator and the install. I think the radiator cost was in the $750-850 range.

Find out if the leak is around this plug and when you replace it, take great care in using the proper torque to reinstall the plug or you may be back to square one.

I agree with FireUp. Any decent radiator shop can probably fix the radiator unless the core is really shot. I recently dropped the Onan genset on my previous coach for serious PM and sent the small radiator to a shop for a good cleaning, test for leaks. They charged me about $75.

If your ESP will cover the cost, I'd get the new one from Onan.

Also, if it were my 14 year old generator, I'd have them replace the drive belt/s, hoses, T-stat and temp sensor while they have it apart. Would be a shame to replace the rad, button it up, then have that pesky temp sensor fail 3 weeks later :S

Phil, Onan 10HDKCA probably not original gen in 2000 Tiffin, as that model first was produced in around 2005. Anyway, Onan part# is 130-6171, suggested list$ 235.02. Any Onan dealer or distributor should be able to get it, from regional warehouse or national distribution center, if they don't have in stock. If you call make sure you have accurate model and spec# info. The earlier model(pre 2005) 10HDCAA uses different radiator than 10 HDKCA. hope this helps (I work at Gen shop)

Phil,
Well Sir, first off, it sure is nice that you, right off the bat, listed what kind of rig you have and, what the radiator is out of. Many just would say, "I need a radiator, where can I get one"? And we'd all be needing more info to possibly help.

It's too bad they told you that. Unless it was seriously damaged or, corroded, about 99% of the copper/brass radiators out there, no matter what their in, can be repaired. That's not to say yours should have or could have been repaired. I've had half my 7.5K Onan apart, twice for various repairs and, getting that radiator out is actually fairly simple. But, two things here.

One, if one is not mechanically inclined, or two, if your generator is not on a sliding tray, it can really put a hex on the time for repair and, of course, the cost. Those radiators, are actually quite small. When I had mine out the first time, it was not having any heating issues (although the bad temp sensor was telling me it was) and, I zipped it down to the local radiator shop for a quick analyze to see if it was in fact, in as good of shape as I thought it was.

They of course, wanted to "rod" it out so, I figured, what the heck, it's out, and, it would be just that much less on my mind in terms of maintenance issues to have completed. So, I let them do it. It was about $85.00 to do it.

I don't know your situation but, a qualified radiator shop would and could have that unit rebuilt, with a guaranty, in no time. Most likely it would take about a day. But, it seems you're at the mercy of your repair facility. I'd maybe talk with them about getting that old one to a radiator shop for analyzing for a rebuild job. Good luck.

It is a Modine Radiator...probably built to Onan specs, probably not an off the shelf item. That means it will be an Onan distributor $$ item. ๐Ÿ™‚
